DPF replacement

Talked with Ford at a trade show and asked about the DPF, can you clean it or replace it. Well Ford chose to replace it, the mileage will vary and the EPA is still setting guide lines. The fact is it will have to be replaced at 120K miles or so and right now they cost 2 grand.

IH cleans theirs and only 2 hours labor.

I'm sure someone will start cutting them open and cleaning them out.

I'd be real careful about adding fuel to the system and plugging it up too quick.

Its not going to stop people from cranking it up.UNTIL they blow it up and go crying to Ford Which they will quickly learn that It will come out of thier own pocket Tampering or Re-writing this engine's operating software with The emissions system intact is playing with a Loaded gun in more ways than one.

Re: DPF replacement

Okay, who knows for sure. I was told the DPF can be cleaned once at about 120 k and then needs to be replaced at about 240k miles. This from a Ford rep as well

Re: DPF replacement

On the Class 8 trucks the shops all have to buy a machine affectionately known as "the battling Hoovers." Easily attached to either side of the DPF they suck and blow and clean out the ash where it is removed from said DPF and is disposed of rendering the DPF good as new.

It won't be long before someone figures out that they can cut out their Ford DPF, take it to the local big rig shop, have it cleaned, and just reinstall it.

Re: DPF replacement

I dunno know about for ford, i've seen pricing on the DPF for internationals...class 5 up to class 8...it ain't like buying a muffler. Its not something you can just 'gut'. If setups for pickup trucks are anything close to bigger trucks, fuel is injected into the exhaust, and burned in the DPF to 'regenerate' it. Temps reach 1000-1200 degrees during a burn. Also has a platinum lining in it, and carries a 4 digit price.

If you ever get a chance to have a peek at a class 8 engine, check out the ISX cummins, it has an injector directly behind the turbo to start the burn. Detroit has an injector in the exhaust too...havent seen an 07 cat, so not sure on that one.

Cleaning is part of a routine maintenance at milegae intervals, unless a code is set or an engine failure that requires cleaning/and or replacement.

Re: DPF replacement

Ford's DPF can be cleaned at least once before the catalyst wears down. They are releasing the machine to do it and the plan on how many and where the cleaning locations are needed. This came from a dealer on their national council.

Re: DPF replacement

I hear the same from mine that a cleaning process was in the works, and possibly a removable plug or system to do it on the truck in the future. This came out of one of the tech round tables. Other issues is servicing as it is very tight to get at things. This is normal for Ford after release to review with their folks on how to fix them easier than what the engineers came up with.

Re: DPF replacement

I deal with cleaning out the DPF's on the new Cat engines. I'm sure that the possibility of cleaning instead of replacing will be a option in the near future because of the cost of replacement. On the heavy duty side of things, Cat requires cleaning every 300,000 miles, but that is about equal to about 75,000 in light duty miles. The machine that is used to clean them is like a big air pump. It sends huge volumes of air in the reverse flow of the exhaust to break loose the ash and blow it out the other way. A trap then collects the ash and then you are good to go. The problem is that these machines are very expensive, around $7,000-10,000, so the will be few and hard to find. The time takes about two hours and on the heavy duty side it can be done on the truck, don't know much about the light duty side. Hope this info helps.

Re: DPF replacement

Do you know what's done with the ash that's cleaned out? Seems like it should be no different than any other ash - maybe toss it in the landfill or mix it in some farmland dirt or something - but I could also see it being considered HAZARDOUS MATERIAL OMG!!! and would require a disposal protocol with fees, etc. (If it's the latter then it won't matter how cheap the backflush machines get, you'll not likely see them anywhere but the dealers.)

I know that Nav tosses the ash in the dumpster. The EPA doesn't seem to care.

Re: DPF replacement

The ash is actually going to be considered hazardous. But there won't be any extra fees that come with getting rid of it. It will be in the same class as waste oil. Don't you love all the fun emissions makes for everyone.

No, the EPA has determined that the ash is inert & non-hazardous. The individual states, however, may require certain disposal methods. Nothing Federal, though.

Re: DPF replacement

If the EPA does not care what happens to the ash once it is removed, what is the point of "trapping" it in the first place?
