DPF Sensor/Regeneration Information Here!!! Everyone In!!

I apologize for taking so long to post, but I wanted to make sure I had my ducks in a row on this one. Back in May 2010 sometime, took the truck to the dealer for a code. When I got it there, it was more or less stuck in regen. Getting super hot, and "cleaning exhaust filter" for what seemed like forever.

As stated before, my dealer is un-exceptional to say the least. The head mechanic is so passionate about these trucks its unbelievable. On that note, I consider myself very lucky.

Now for the update.
1) DPF Pressure Sensor Information - Ford is looking for 0-1.2 at idle, something in the middle of that on the highway, and 7.0 on the high end to start regen. My truck was .6 at idle, and 3.5 wide open throttle. Tech said 7.0 trips the regeneration.
2) The tech went through (3) YES THREE DPF pressure sensors before he found one that would read correctly. The other two were defective in some way. SCARY if you ask me. Read on!
3) Dealer drove truck for ~120 miles to gather enough data with the labtop to convince him the truck was running properly.
4) Truck has newest flash, and all updates are complete
5) He suggested using cetane additive to help the truck run better, less regens.

Fast forward. Truck seems to run great. I am mixed 50/50 highway/city. Truck regens every 650 miles, like clockwork. Last three regens were 650, 637, 700 miles. When it regens, I just jump on the highway, and go for a 65mph cruise. Regens last 12-15 minutes, again, like clockwork. MPG on the dash display drops ONLY .1. Same every time. Goes from 12.4 to 12.3. No more, no less. The first time, I towed 15k for an estimated 200 miles of the 650. Nothing changed as far as regenning more/less.

My conclusion/thoughts.
There is a way to get these things to run correctly, and NOT regen all the time. I am now convinced that guys having regen problems, poor MPG, and any problems realted to these components have something wrong with the trucks. DPF Pressure sensors could VERY WELL be the problem. If it were me, and your dealer is not helping you, start by changing just the sensor. I think they are $84, and WELL worth the effort to try it. Also, I found an aftermarket company that has them for $25. Try CSTsensors, or Flo-Pro in a google search. Not sure which is what, or where. It's almost like every three oil changes or something, you want to add a pressure sensor to your maintanence schedule. The get sooted up something fierce. Dealer tried to clean it up, but deemed that un-succesful.

I hope this helps, and I'm sure it will. Don't believe the BS these guys are feeding you. These trucks WILL run with the DPF's.

Jim

Thanks for the post and the heads up. I'm not having regen problems now but I'll keep this in mind in the future.

Good for you. This one is bookmarked for future reference. I once had a teacher that told me, never be scared of a job. Man designed it, built it and can fix it. Everything is fixable.

I'm going to hit one more regen, and then start using the cetane additive. Will see if I can see a difference with that.

One last thing that has me wondering. I asked about the black sooted tailpipes vs. the clean ones. To me, that just has to mean something. Tech said he never thought of it, never paid any attention to it, but would keep it in mind. Go figure. They look at the labtop to troubleshoot, and thats about it. Coulda had flames coming out of the pipe for all he knew...... Wait a minute................

It *does* mean something, it means that the DPF is cracked, allowing some soot to leak through. This does not however have much effect on DPF operation or regen cycles, at most giving you slightly longer between regen cycles.

My pipes are black, and sooted. Could this explain everything? Sounds like it.

It's always been that if your pipes are that black then you have a bad DPF. Do you know if the dealer tech checked that out while testing?

Checked what? I showed him the sooted pipe. I pointed to one in the lot without a sooted pipe. He acknowledged the two, but couldn't offer an explanation. That's about it.

Checked the DPF to see if it was cracked or not.

Thanks JIM342STRKR for the really useful info. Not wanting to hijack your thread, but how hard is it to install a new DPF sensor anyway? Is it as easy as it looks...remove tubing from old sensor, unscrew from DPS, screw in new sensor, attach tubing. Can it be that simple? I know the old one may be a little tough to get out (rust, corrosion), but are there any tricks to doing it? Found them on line at a really decent price...

It'll be very interesting to see what happens if more people with frequent regens replace these sensors.

I truely don't think the sensors for 90% of the folks is the issue. I tend to think that if the sensors were out of tolerance then it would throw a code.

What I do think is there is a cause for the soot still showing in the pipes. Trouble is that is a hard one to pin down. For the same reasons, no codes. Until it gets really bad that is.

Originally you could point straight to the DPF as the source of the problem. Now that they have been out for some time I am not so sure.

Injectors need to be checked, the sensors as well before a new DPF.
