drove one today

well i finnally drove a new one today, just like my 02 , f350 , i never drove a 6.0 before, but my 02 will deffinitlly smoke the 6.4 from a dead stop. they are really slow from a stop lite, i have a super chip programer but i thought with twin turbos the new one would be faster off the line, the mid range power was about the same. i think ill keep the oll 7.3 for a while longer.

Re: drove one today

It's big buck's to get into a new one for sure..Not to mention setting the new one up like the old one..between the camper, plow, snowmobiles, business stuff to carry.

But for me it is soooooooo nice. I will miss my 02 7.3 Lariet which gave me 140K trouble free mileage..but I now look forward to the next 6 yrs. with this one..I hope I get the same trouble free ride..

It is so much quieter, better mirrors, front dash layout, headlight setup, tailgate assist which is very nice, etc.
I don't put the pedal to the floor so I don't need Programers, etc. I don't notice a difference between the two diesels really. Although if a quieter ride makes it feel smoother, faster then it does that for me.

Another thing is I'm back into a warranty and don't have to worry about putting it back into the shop for lot's of little things.. Hopefully. I need the truck for work most of the time.

Just my reasons to move on to a new truck.. My old one ran perfect the day I sold it still. If I just used it for hauling to the dump once and a while I would have kept the old one..

Re: drove one today

Yours might beat it from a stop when its new, but i, and many others, have found out that the 6.4l gets much quicker as it breaks in.

Re: drove one today

I've got almost 3K on my 6.4L, and the difference from brand new to now is 180 degrees. The truck was a total dog with major turbo lag when it was brand new. Now, it's pretty damn impressive for stock HP..
I doubt there is a stock 7.3L that will stay with the 6.4L. It's as fast as a 6.0L and maybe faster.
I have to wonder if there is something about the DPF that may be very restrictive when new, but loosens up after a few regens..

As far as the truck, the only similaraties between the older SDs and the 08' is the sheet metal.
This is by far the best riding, quietest, best handling truck Ford has ever built. I have the 6,000 front springs, and it rides better than my wife's Tahoe.

These trucks are overly expensive and very limited to modifications. Is it worth it?
Is any vehicle worth 55K?
The good ole' days are history, so if you like to play, keep the 7.3L. My chipped 6.0L was a monster, and I doubt I'll be able to do much with this truck unless I want to scrap the warranty.

Re: drove one today

Don't buy the 6.4L, according to this site it is junk and with the 7.3's getting between 22 and 28 mpg why would you trade?

Re: drove one today

"7.3's getting between 22 and 28 mpg" What are you talking about? My 03 7.3 gets decent milage (18-19 mpg hwy and 15.5-16 city, empty and with the light foot), but 22 to 28 I think you are miscalculating a little bit. What do you do, coast down a 6% grade in neutral??

Although the 6.4's are popping up with some issues here and there, I think it is way too early to jump to the conclusion that the "6.4's are junk."

George, what setting did you run your 6.0 chip on? Stock tranny, correct?

Re: drove one today

160, but WOT was useless. The tranny never shifted right in 160.
Worked fine in 120.
But wow, could it tow...

BTW,
Some guy in town just bought a white Mega short box DRW.
I didn't know Dodge made one. The rear fenders had flaps instead of the bubble. He has it tricked out a little....
Very weird and different looking, but I really kinda liked it..
DON'T tell Richard!

Re: drove one today

Mine has right about 1,800 miles and it's a tad slow off the line but, it passes on the highway fine. I'm actually impressed with the passing power it has, it would blow away any of my 7.3L and close to my 6.0L's
Plus, it sounds totally cool and it's fun to watch people drool in the vehicle next to you looking at this beast

to each their own.
I would rather spend 50k on a truck, and know that if something goes wrong, i dont have to fix it, than spend 15K on a truck with 150K on the odo, and worry about failures, and coming out of pocket for everything.
especially when its my wife that drives it the most.

Re: drove one today

I have a old dodge with 150,000 miles and i am less worried about it having 'problems' than i ever have been with a 'new' truck. You can't keep buying a new truck for the 36,000 miles warranty...well, you can, but its not smart.
