External Tranny Filter

Has anyone changed it and if you have where did you get the release tool for the quick coupler end. Standard sizes the fit fuel lines DO NOT work. Be prepared not to be able to sit for quite some time after buying the filter....I get a discount and it still cost $ 76.00...ridiculous for something the size of a small oil filter.

Tim,

Do you mean this one? If so, then you don't need to disconnect the oil lines. Just spin the housing off, and swap out the filter. Only $17.50 plus shipping.

That's not it. It has 4 fittings on a ss metal can. Looks like you replace the whole thing. Funky plastic looking fittings. You need a special tool.

On an '05, how does one keep the o-ring in the filter housing from leaking after replacing the filter? Nothing in the shop manual about how much (or how little) to tighten. Thanks.

where is it located? If it is up front by the radiator on the passenger side frame rail, that is the element for it. To unscrew the bottom that has a hex fitting on the bottom, use an air gun to break it free. If not, you will twist it off the bracket.

Scottb NY: Yep, that's the one.

After six tries -- it's not leaking. But I'm not very comfortable with it. It's only hand-tightened plus about an eighth of a turn. Any more tightening seems to push the o-ring off the seat. Not a good design.

Thanks for the reply.

Ron

This is the 2008 forum
I have the same issue with the fittings. I guess it is a Ford part. I took mine in to the dealer and they just changed the fluid. I guess they didn't have the fitting tool either.

you dont need a tool, you need a socket and an air gun and the replacement element.

The release tool is available from many sources.... I got mine from the MAC tool vendor in our area....

A few requirements.... if you aren't sure... shut up, sit back and learn.... If your dealer isn't sure.... run away.... run away very fast....

Tim is NOT speaking of the old frame mounted "toilet paper" looking filter.... Tim is talking about a filter that many of you haven't looked for or at.... and it is on early build 08s only.... and it takes a special tool to remove the lines... and the tool is available (if your dealer doesn't have it - he should become your ex-dealer)....

Been following due to curiousity..certainly has been confusing..even got 05 mixed in. Now...

GJ says..Early 08 has one type external a/t filter..later models apparently have different type? Seem's like more confusion..so what's the diff.?

OK, here's what he's talking about. I have an early job 1 built in January of 2007.

Here's a close-up of the filter, sorry these are from one side only, but I was taking pictures for the dealer to see where I found an oil leak, turns out it was the oil return tube from the turbo, but that's a different story!
