Hello everyone,
I ordered a new 350 psd cc 4x4 lariat on 12-29-07.February my dealer calls me up
says i can't get the 3.73 gears, I have to get 3.55 gears or cancel the order. He says the computer kicks it out.The truck is due to be built 3-5-08 around there.
I look on blue oval forum I see trucks with 3.73 gears ordered after mine.
Does any one know whats going on? I called ford customer service they don't
know
Thanks Pete
Hopefully someone knowledgable will chime in quick. All I can tell you is that I would NOT buy a F-350 with 3.55 gears. Nice boulevard cruiser but IMHO not an ideal towing vehicle. Something does sound fishy. Do you have complete trust in your salesman? Could he be trying to get you to cancel the order and buy off the lot from what he's got? Maybe you should have the dealer do a search from other dealers for an available truck that has your trim and options on it from existing stock. I had heard that 3.55 was going to be the standard gear set but that 3.73 and 4.10 and 4.30 in the Tow Boss was still going to be an option.

Ford has announced that its 2008 F-250 and F-350 heavy duty trucks will come with new fuel saving measures. The revised trucks will come equipped with 3.55 rear axle ratio — instead of the current truck's 3.73 setup — as well as a 3.93 inch (100 mm) chin spoiler.
Despite the numerically lower ratio, Ford claims the trucks will keep their current tow ratings. However, acceleration times will likely suffer.
The improvements should net about a 1.5 mpg improvement over current fuel economy. Three-quarter and one-ton trucks are not required to carry an EPA fuel economy rating so an exact measurement of the improvements is hard to discern, but likely in the 10 to 15-percent range.
"We are making the 3.55 standard and when that's combined with new front-end aerodynamic improvements, there will be about a 1.5 mpg improvement," said Ford trucks spokesperson Wes Sherwood. He continued: "Ford is constantly looking to innovate with its trucks. Fuel economy is on people's minds right now and we're not going to wait until the next model year to make a change. We're going to implement changes like this as soon as we can."
I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over the axle change...3.73 to 3.55 is almost not noticible...probably about the same as a tire size increase. Also doubt that it will affect mileage much either

My 7.3 pulls a trailer just fine with even more radical gearing. I'd hate to think the 6.4 was such a weenie engine it couldn't match the towing capacity of an old 7.3.

Something doesn't make sense.
Assuming a PSD in an SRW with automagic tranny:
The current order guide says 3.55 ratio is standard with 17" or 18" wheels/tires, and that 3.73 LS is standard with 20" wheels/tires. 3.73 LS is optional with 17" and 18" wheels/tires.
Perhaps you tried to order 3.73 open axle? That one is no longer available. Tell the dealerperson to code the axle "XEL" and the computer should take it according to the Order Guide - but it will cost you extra for the LS.

I think my dealer messed up ,3.73 LS were ordered on the order sheet!
I called Bobby Williams he said he could order the 3.73 LS gears. So I think
I will reorder with him. Its just ashame I wasted 8 weeks time and i might miss
0 finance?
Pete
I just looked at fords build your own truck, it wont let you order 3.73 gears with 18' wheels
you have to get 20" wheels ...
Yep, Ford's build and price website is messed up when it comes to axle ratio. Or else the Order Guide is messed up. I suspect it's the geeks that do the website that can't read an order guide.

I love Bobby, and hate to cost him a sale, but before I'd waste 8 weeks I'd go to the dealership and stand on somebody's desk demanding they fix the order so you can get 3.73LS ratio, or else show you in the printed order guide where it's not available.
Of course, the computer ordering system overrides the order guide, but they usually keep them in gee. If your dealerperson does a "change order" and codes X3L axle, what is the result? Make them show you.
Of course I'm assuming you ordered the diesel engine, else all bets are off.

The truck is a auto, apparently with a manual trans you get 3.73, auto you get 3.55 non or LS ,f/x package you get 3.55 LS . With 20" wheels 3.73 is standard.
This info is for SRW trucks. This is from the paper ordering guide dated 2-1-08

That sounds like you have a later ordering guide than is available from Bobby's website. The "axle availability" page is dated 12/01/07 in the latest version available on Bobby's website. And it definitely says 3.73 LS is an option for both F-250 PSD and F-350 SRW PSD with automagic tranny.

Don't know if this applies, but on 2.20.2008 I ordered a F-250 CC 4x4 Lariat 6.4L with 3.73 LS. It came standard with the 3.55 gears, but I opted for the 3.73 LS. 3.73 LS gears is definitely what is on the order form I have in my hand.
