F450 Engine/Transmission Braking Experiences while Towing
For those of you towing a large trailer or 5th wheel, what is your experience with the engine /transmission braking capabilities of the 6.4 & auto transmission? On my previous Chevy Duramax I had a BD Exhaust Brake which really helped out a lot but I believe Ford may have built in speed retardation control with the new 08s. Hoping for some insight here as I am going to start towing my 5th wheel soon.
Thanks!

Re: F450 Engine/Transmission Braking Experiences while Towing
Just got back from a 1500+ mile trip towing the fifth wheel. Over Donner Pass, CA (twice), and other mountain roads (with up to 10% grades) and never felt the need to do anything other than put the truck in a lower gear. Usually third was enough to keep the truck and trailer combo at or below 30 mph. An occasional stab on the brakes would keep it in the 25 mph range quite easily. IMHO, you won't need an exhaust brake with this truck!
Just make sure you have your mirrors adjusted, you'll forget the trailer is back there!

I second that! I didn't know campers had so much in them!

Re: F450 Engine/Transmission Braking Experiences while Towing
I recently completed a 4,000 mile round trip to Casper(factory visit) most of the time towing a 22,000lb Teton. Traveled from I-70 to I-80 to Casper and I-25 to I-70 coming home. In western Maryland, Pa and WV I ran into some 7% grades going up and coming down. I had tow/haul selected and had the cruise control set to 60mph. The truck easily maintained speed on the climb and never oversped coming down the hills. Without ever touching the brakes, the transmission downshifted, TC stayed locked allowing the load to maintain 60mph. When the need arose to slow down(nitwits cutting in front of me)brake application resulted in further downshifts/locked TC assisting the brakes. Speaking of brakes, by far the best braking of any truck/car that I have driven. The F-450 with it's nice interior and very comfortable seats made a long, rather boring drive fun.

Re: F450 Engine/Transmission Braking Experiences while Towing
We just towed for the first time with new 450. We have a 15,500# 5er and have towed it 120,000 miles with 2000 350 PSD SRW, with a USGear exhaust brake. As we have lots of grades out west I used it almost daily when towing.
The 450 in the tow/haul mode held the desired speed better than the exhaust brake did on the 2000 towing the same trailer.

Re: F450 Engine/Transmission Braking Experiences while Towing
I towed for the first time today with my new F450. I towed an Aliner travel trailer, that was floating along. This tow classified as a "break in period?" Little bit of overkill or maybe I should have used a Duramax?
