I'm putting this up for a budy of mine. He has a 08 450 with about 5K miles on it. Since day one this truck wanders all over the road. When he tows his 5er the wander seems to get a little better but it is still difficult to keep the truck in the lane. He has taken it back to the dealer several times for the problem. They say nothing is wrong with the alignment and all componets are good. After the last time at the dealer they told him that all 450 do this and to call Ford customer service and tell them about the problem. Basicly have a nice day. Im throwing this out there to see if anyone else is having the problems.
Thanks for your time

Can not speak for anyone else. My truck seems once in a while to ride the highway grooves. But in over 10,000 miles of towing , I have had no problem like you describe. Truck handles like a champ. Maybe he should check TSB's.

My truck has the problem. It's the damn tires. Here is information about it.
F-450 Pickup--steering wander on rough roads: Some trucks may exhibit a wander feeling on rough or rutted roads. This condition may be worse with all terrain tires than with highway tread. Customers should be aware that the F-450 pickup is based on the cab and chassis model. Although ride characteristics should be better than the cab and chassis, they will still be more harsh than the F-350 dually. Verify the tires are inflated to the pressures on the tires specification placard. The symptom should be compared to a like vehicle under similar conditions/road surfaces. Inspect suspension fastener torque and alignment angles. It is recommended that at least 1000 miles are accumulated on the truck for steering gear break in before attempting to diagnose. Tire replacement is not recommended. Broadcast Message 7236.

Our previous 99.5 F-450 cab frame w/Fontiane bed and our new 08 F-450 pickup both do this to some extent on concrete roads with parallel groves when riding empty. When towing a fiver, the weight on the back axle makes the problem disappear for us.
Thanks for the replies. I'll pass this info on. and Gearjammer, thanks for the TSB. I had a heck of a time with wandering on my f250 and it ended up being tires. That's what I sugjested to him but after reading that TSB it might not be......
Thanks again

Both the farm F-550 and my buddies F-450 did it when the tires were new but they seem to do it less after they get some miles on them. It is the tires doing it.
My f450 was all over the road. Ford changed the tires with the non -aggressive Continentals. It is better now. I run the front tires a little softer when empty. It still grabs the ruts when hauling but it is better.

I have an 08 450 lariat and I too felt the wander. Took it to dealer and they agreed, checked the tire inflation and said this is just the 450. I am getting a little bit used to it and so I don't notice as much, but it is still there. Read somewhere to wait until you get 10,000 miles and get steering box checked.

I'm at 13,000 and change and it still wanders. It's not as bad as when I first got it. I'm thinking about having the alignment redone with a little negative camber.

Hey Gearjammer, have the alignment shop max out the caster too. That will definitely add some stability at speed. My truck "wanders" on rough roads and freeways at speed too.

I have a F-350 that sits pretty high and it would wander a little. I put on a new steering stabilizer and I can go as fast as i want and never touch the wheel. It does not wander a bit now.

We are talking about dual rear wheel trucks. The rear wheels want to come around on rough roads and grooved pavement.
