Hi - I bought a 2008 F350 4x2 two months ago. I have a few questions:
1) Is it OK to wait until the dash indicator light comes on to drain the fuel/water separator? The manual says do it monthly OR when the dash light comes on. (I put very few miles on it right now until I get my 5th wheel next spring)
2) I have a 4x2 and cannot fit under the cab steps to access the fuel/water separator. What's the safest way to jack up the truck so I can access it? I've only used scissors/bumper jacks before to change tires, but don't want to risk using something like that while I'm under this heavy truck.
3) Is it OK to start the truck up, back it 25 feet until it's out of my garage, and then shut it off immediately (to drain the separator)? Or will that immediate on/off sequence cause a problem with a diesel engine?
Thank you and sorry for the dumb newbie questions!
Gary

#1. I would say drain once a month like the manual says. Not worth risking injector or pressure pump damage on a few minutes of work. I have a 4x4, most of the time to drain off the water is spent getting onto the ground and getting back up. The draining takes 2 seconds. Yours will take slightly longer because you will have to back it out, set up some ramps, pull it up on them. Shut the engine off, get out, get under the drivers door, drain some fuel/water, get up, get back in, back it down, move ramps and pull back in the garage. I have lots fewer steps. About 3 total. Either way, we are talking minutes. 5 minutes is worth about 10 bucks, max. New injectors or pressure pump adds up to a good deal of minutes.

That's what I was going to say.... .
When I can't find a curb that's handy and I'm at home I have 2 pieces of 2x8 screwed togeteher that I roll onto. They're cheap, work great and look like below.
