WASHINGTON – Ford Motor Co. on Wednesday told dealers to temporarily stop selling certain 2008 F-series Super Duty diesel pickups after receiving reports of flames shooting out of the vehicle's tailpipe.
Ford said it was recalling 37,400 F-Series Super Duty trucks with 6.4-liter diesel engines. The majority of the pickups – 29,000 – were still on dealer lots, the automaker said.
Ford spokesman Dan Jarvis said it received three reports of flames coming from the truck's tailpipe, caused by leaking fuel that ignited in the exhaust system's diesel particulate filter near the tailpipe.
"It's really something that we noticed early on and we're moving swiftly to fix the problem," Jarvis said.
There have been no injuries or vehicle fires connected to the recall. There has been one report of a grass fire in Texas that was quickly extinguished, he said.
Jarvis said the flames could only occur in engines with leaking fluids, which he said was very rare. Two of the complaints involved leaking fuel injectors and the other involved leaks coming from a crack in the turbocharger shaft.
The automaker will have dealers upgrade software for the powertrain control module, which will power down the engine under higher-than-expected temperatures in the diesel particulate filter. Similar software updates will take place at the Louisville, Ky., plant where the trucks are built.
Jarvis said the stop sale order should only last a few days as dealers reprogram the software. Owners of the remaining 8,400 trucks will be notified about the recall in early April and will be able to have the software upgrade at no charge.
In a separate action, fewer than 10,000 of the trucks will have the battery cable rerouted to avoid chafing against a shield in the engine compartment that prevents water and mud from getting into the engine.
Ford said the recall does not affect gasoline-powered pickups or those with 6.0-liter or 7.3-liter diesel engines.

i heard it is the same problem on all 08s duracraps and cumminn a longs too.

Could be, tho I haven't seen anything on the CTD forums (yet). Prolly no big deal....same thing happened years ago when cats were first mandated on cars & trucks. They ended up having to install heat shields to prevent torching the dry grass & weeds when the vehicle left the pavement.

In theory, practice and theory are the same.
In practice, they are not.
Crap, people pay good money to mod their trucks to shoot flames out of the tailpipe. Looks like it comes standard with the 6.4L

What a joke, good funny. The CTDs are rock solid and haven't heard anything about the Duramax either.
Get over it. The 6.0 had its problems and a lot of folks are worrying so much about the 6.4 that they lose objectivity. The 6.4 needs some time to work the bugs out. Stop looking to bad mouth all the other brands.

The way things are looking for Ford this new 6.4 may never have time to get the bugs worked out. If in fact this new engine is a flop Ford is not long for this world unless the Govt steps in to save the day much as it did w/Chrysler/Dodge. I hope this newbie diesel is a home run because I dread the thoughts of a monopoly car company.

Sky is not falling, problem was caught very early on and a total of 3 sales days were pushed back. Majority of owners are experiencing no problems. If the recall ivolves 37k trucks that is a pretty good sales figure considering they just arrived at the dealerships for the most part at the beginning of the month.
In regards to GM, their HD's just hit lots this week and a few late last week. Don't be all that surprised if GM and Dodge have some teething issues as well. I just love the "quick to judge" crowd that assumes the engine is sh## because of this. Give the GM/Dodge guys a few weeks/miles then we'll see what is in common. Furthermore one of the reasons stated was injectors. GM also uses the same manufacture for their injectors, not sure about Dodge, but wouldn't be surprised. You might want to read into their high idle issue that basically involves a magical tap dance and a couple twists of the wrist to get it to idle at normal again.
Not stating this info to bash other mfgrs, but if you think Ford is the only one working out a relatively minor issue think again. All things considering if this is as bad as it gets it will be a home run.
If you take the time to read the article you will notice that the software update is not a fix, it is a band aid to prevent fire. You will see there were Turbo shaft problems and possibly injectors. Ford isn't sure, they are speculating. These are the reasons I am not a first year new engine buyer. I will buy on in 2010 if they are still here.

This was the same thought I had too. So they are stopping it from shooting a flame, but that might be your only early warning that you have a fuel leak.
