6.4L Power Stroke Engine and DrivetrainDiscussion of the 6.4L Power Stroke diesel engine and drivetrain in the 2008 Super-Duty trucks. No gas engine discussion allowed except on transmissions and drivetrain that pertain to all models. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 6.4L Power Stroke engine.
Anyone know about the cooloing system in the 08's it looks like over kill, one radiator in front of another. How would the radiator next to the engine cool if it does not get fresh air, it is being blocked.
I think the radiator you saw in front of the radiator is in fact the intercooler. I read where the SuperDuty has five coolers total, and the new engine cooling radiators was brought over from the F-550, probably that is why it appears so large.

It's been like this forever. There is a radiator for coolant, a/c condenser, and an intercooler in the previous years....even the 7.3's. Nothing new...

The exchanger stack has a CAC (charge air cooler), AC condenser, trans cooler, power steering cooler, and radiator. They're just big and right out front on the '08s, but there's nothing that hasn't been there before.

Something new is the fuel cooler, mounted on left side of engine, on top. One more cooler would be nice, mounted in the center console to keep my M&M's from melting

There should be a rad. for coolent feeding the fuel cooler also.

Why? It's the same coolant as the rest of the system is using. You size your radiator based on all the heat inputs (engine, EGR, fuel cooler, oil cooler, etc.) and off you go.

To drop the coolent temp even more for the fuel cooler. We are cooling the return fuel that was not used so it just got Squished to 12 up to 29k PSI so it a little on the hot side.

Ok. let me start by saying I never had a vehicle with a temp guage for the transmission.
What is pecular is that sometimes the tranny warms up to middle(meaning the needle is in the middle) before the engine and other times it is the opposite.
This happens under what seems like equal driving conditions(no real hills or anything a short street drive to the fwy)
Is it possible one or both of the guages is faulty?
I have a 2008 f-350 4x4 diesel

I'm familiar with the purpose and function of a fuel cooler (read the job title in my sig: thermal management pays my mortgage and provides me with my racing budget).
But it doesn't need its own radiator if the single radiator is sized appropriately (which it is on the '08 SD). It's *THE SAME COOLANT*. It does not have a separate, independent cooling system like the air-to-water CAC on an '03-'04 Cobra or '99-'03 Lightning or '04-'06 GT or '07+ GT500. The fuel cooler uses the same coolant as the rest of the engine. Thus, it doesn't need its own pump, reservoir, and radiator.
I might add that the heat contribution from the fuel cooler is trivial compared to the engine itself and the EGR cooler. WAAAAY less than would justify its own independent cooling system.

No, they're behaving exactly the same as coolant and trans temp gauges have been working for the OEMs for YEARS. Little secret: they're not real gauges. There's a rapid rise to the center of the normal range, then a HUGE flat spot on the response curve, then they'll go to hot when things are really hot.
There are a number of reasons for this, but I don't have time right now to dive into them all. I've posted many tales of how they got that way on the boards here.

Aw come on I would love to hear them...or is that just a nice way to say "perform a search"
I kinda figured as much, my other car has an oil pressure gauge which is basically a dummy light. it goes to center or zero... thats it. They shouldnt be allowed to say that they are gauges imho. Probably a thread on that too somewhere.

[/ QUOTE ] Sorry to tell ya The 6.4 has a separate cooling system for the fuel cooler/turbo actuator. It has it's own radiator, electric water pump, reservoir, hoses, heat exchanger and coolant. The reason they did it this way is the engines radiator runs too hot for the fuel temps they want.
