Fuel additives

I noticed when i picked my truck up on fri. the dealer made a special point to tell me not to use alcohol based fuel additives. I looked on my bottles of Power Service, and Howes lubricator and it says nothing about alcohol based, and they both say safe in new ULSD engines. Will both of these work ok in my new 6.4L?? Didn't wanna take the chance before asking the question, thanks!

If I am not mistaken, power service says it has no alcohol.

I made sure the Amsoil addatives said "for use with ULSD and DPF"

Power Service Diesel Kleen & Cetane Boost, and Howe's Meaner Power Kleaner are both alcohol free. Don't know if those are the 2 additives you're using.

By the way, I have a new F450 on order now here in PA and will be driving it your way in May to where we spend the summer and fall just north of Emigrant. I hope I can afford to keep it in fuel all summer, because we typically drive upwards of 8,000 miles until we return to PA sometime in October.

I don't think I'll be able to swing it this summer, but next year for sure I'd like to get a second daily driver for when we're in MT (not sure I can get into all the places I want to with a dually), and keep the F450 in our storage place on Manhattan Road west of Belgrade.

A manager at our Ford dealership here who specializes in trucks recommended that a good additive be added to every fill-up on these new trucks. I haven't decided for sure yet what I'm going to use, but am leaning toward Stanadyne Performance Formula. Between that and the price of diesel I think I'll need to take out a second mortgage!

are all additives the same?

i'm hung up on which additive to use?? seems to me they should be pretty close to the same. they all advertise "cetane boost". i'm stuck between stanadyne blue label and the motorcraft???? decisions....decisions....

Power Service cetane boost and Howe's meaner power cleaner are the two i have been using in the past (most readily avail. around here). By looking at the bottle it appeared to be ok, but it made me sleep better at night knowing that someone on here knew!

That's cool that you spend the summers out here, i know what you mean about the fuel prices!! We will be driving back and forth to B.Sky daily and am not looking forward to that bill. I have three diesels that will be making the daily trip!!! Might be trading them in on subaru's, jokes!

check this out...

I was on the fence as well, then I found this study online.

http://inchoate.harm.org/~halbritt/d...itive%20V3.pdf

Now at least I have some hard numbers to use when I purchase an additive.

wouldn't ford take this (loss of lubricity in ULSD) into consideration when doing R&D (research&dev) on this engine? i've had mine ('08 CC lariat 4wd) for about a year and don't seem to be having any probs, but obviously if i can do something of benefit without damaging and/or voiding warranty i'll do it. does anyone know what ford recommends (if they recommend anything)? i think i read something in an earlier thread about a motorcraft product....any help is appreciated.

Ford recommends the Motorcraft cetane booster on the sales DVD, but that is probably because its their own product.

Let us know how the XPD works for you! It looks like the best stuff out there now. I'm still burning through the Motorcraft that I have before I switch to something else.
