Fuel Cooler maintnance

I looked in the main manual and the diesel supplement and it doesn’t mention maintaining the Fuel Cooler (an index would have been nice here).

Anybody know what to do with this thing? Is it part of the main cooling system?

I looked at (and down loaded about half) the 6.4L bible at
http://www.backglass.org/duncan/ps64_manual/

Still didn’t show much…

Thanks in advance…

Re: Fuel Cooler maintnance

Just has coolant and a little pump. I'd think it would need much.

Re: Fuel Cooler maintnance

The auxillary cooling system is an entirely separate system from the primary (engine} cooling system.

Consists of the OTA heat exchanger, the electric coolant pump, the fuel cooler and the VGT actuator cooler. The coolant pump can run anywhere up to 10 minutes after the truck is shut off.... that ought to please the folks that didn't like the post cycle injector buzz though I must admit I haven't heard the pump run yet to see what noise level it emits.

Neither the diesel owners supplement nor the WSM differentiates between the two cooling systems and only states "coolant exchange interval". We are left to assume that the service interval for both is the same (until we see a TSB, SSM, or broadcast message stating otherwise).

For anyone that is going to perform their own cooling system service, there is a special procedure for purging air from the auxillary cooler.

Re: Fuel Cooler maintnance

Thanks Grampy-Jim!

I knoew you smrt guys would have an answer.

Do you know where to find the purge procedure?

I am asking this because the magnitude of the importance is directly proportional to the likelihood of having a problem…

Re: Fuel Cooler maintnance

It ain't exactly one of those repairs you'd want to perform on the side of the road:

Fuel and Turbocharger Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding

Draining

WARNING: Always allow the engine to cool before opening the cooling system. Do not unscrew the coolant pressure relief cap when the engine is operating or the cooling system is hot. The cooling system is under pressure; steam and hot liquid can come out forcefully when the cap is loosened slightly. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.

1. Allow the fuel cooling system to cool and remove the pressure relief cap.

2. Disconnect the coolant hoses at the fuel cooling system radiator and drain the coolant into an appropriate container.

Filling and Bleeding

1. Connect the coolant hoses at the fuel cooling system radiator.

2. NOTE: The side bolt does not have to be removed to remove the fuel cooling system radiator.

Remove the fuel cooling system radiator top bolt.

3. Slide the fuel and turbocharger cooling system radiator up off the side bolt and position the radiator horizontally.

4. Remove the plug from the turbocharger actuator cooler.

5. Fill the fuel and turbocharger cooling system through the expansion tank until the coolant reaches the top of the turbocharger actuator plug hole.

6. Install the turbocharger cooler plug. Tighten to 33 Nm (24 lb-ft).

7. NOTE: If the coolant pump does not operate when the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position, disconnect the coolant pump-to-fuel cooler hose from the fuel cooler, place the end of the hose in a clear container and run the engine until the coolant pump turns on and coolant starts to fill the container. Shut the engine off, connect the coolant pump-to-fuel cooler hose to the fuel cooler and proceed with the bleed procedure.

Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position to activate the coolant pump. Allow the coolant pump to run for one minute.

8. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

9. Remove the plug from the turbocharger actuator cooler.

10. Fill the fuel and turbocharger cooling system through the expansion tank until the coolant reaches the top of the turbocharger actuator plug hole.

11. Install the turbocharger actuator cooler plug. Tighten to 33 Nm (24 lb-ft).

12. Fill the coolant expansion tank until the coolant in the coolant expansion tank is visible through the site glass.

13. Position the fuel and turbocharger cooling system radiator and install the bolt. Tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).

14. Install the pressure relief cap.

15. Clean any coolant that may have spilled on the engine components.

Fuel cooler? Why exactly does the 6.4 need a fuel cooler? WTH is a fuel cooler??

Consider how hot the pump would run pumping 28,000 psi. Excess fuel is diverted to the cooler and returned to the pump for cooling the pump and to be sent to the injectors.

The 6.0 is an apple... the 6.4 is an orange. I dare anyone to compare them.....

The 6.0 has more in common with the 7.3 than it will ever have in common with the 6.4.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing...

Some people may think you have chosen the wrong fruit for an analogy of the 6.0 motor. Some would say the lemon is more appropriate.
