Fuel issues???? can I fuel this new motor in Mexico?

I keep hearing that this new motor is going to run on a specific type of diesel.... low sulfar or something specific.... I'm concerned that I won't find a place in Baja California (mexico) that will have this type of fuel.... does anyone have some information that they can share on this?

Re: Fuel issues???? can I fuel this new motor in Mexico?

It is called Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) and has only 15 parts per million of sulfur. You HAVE to use it or you will clog the particulate filter prematurely. The diesel fuel that was being used had 500 parts per million.

Re: Fuel issues???? can I fuel this new motor in Mexico?

Isn't there some ruling that all the diesel fuel in the US will have to be this type within a certain amount of time? Anyone know if Mexico is going to comply? This is a serious issue for me! If I can't fill this thing up at a Pemex.... I'm screwed!

Up here in Wisconsin thats all we have is that ULSD Ultra low sufer diesel. There may be a station or two that still has the reg. diesel but most that I know only have ULSD.

Re: Fuel issues???? can I fuel this new motor in Mexico?

From what I have heard through some unofficial channels, it will not hurt to run a tank or two of LSD fuel through the new engine. It sounded like as long as it was not consistantly LSD, you should be in the clear. If you are in doubt, you may want to look at purchasing a service tank for in the bed, and carry along some extra fuel depending on how long your trip will be.

Re: Fuel issues???? can I fuel this new motor in Mexico?

Don't know if that will work. I would suggest an underbed tank if you can.

I know Mexico has laws about bringing in fuel, and they may still harass you if they see a big tank in the bed. I know we have to show race numbers if we take the race gas down there.

Even then, they want you to buy it locally.

The deadline for ULSD in Canada was September 1, 2006. As far as I know it is already at the pumps.

Re: Fuel issues???? can I fuel this new motor in Mexico?

Almost all Canadian fuel stations are all ULSD right now. Only the ultra rare occasional station in the boonies or at some truck stops will be LSD.

Just like you guys in the US (except California), we are following the same rough guidelines for ULSD, 90% of the stations now, 100% of the stations by June 2010.

Re: Fuel issues???? can I fuel this new motor in Mexico?

I travel to Baja every other week, we run off road motorcycle tours and we also race three times a year. We are all somking dope if we think the Mexicans are going to produce the new fuels, they do not even make primium,(it's made by Arco and sent to Baja, Mexico)we are already planning to replace our trucks with new used ones, (06's). The Mexicans will not say anything about the fuel you take down in mounted tanks, they know that at $1.81 a gallon who would want to bring fuel into Mexico. And needing over 160 gallons for Cabo and back I dont think it is an option.Ihop someone finds a way around the new fuel our we are screwed!!!

[/ QUOTE ]No in Mexico they will just sell trucks without the DPF since they DON'T have to meet US smog standards (they are a different country afterall). Unfortunatly removing the DPF (and reinstalling upon return) isn't really a valid option for someone headed down there for a week or so.
