No gas engine discussion allowed except on transmissions and drivetrain that pertain to all models. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 6.4L Power Stroke engine.
Well, the 6.0L was supposed to be 10% better than the 7.3L, but actually gets slightly worse mileage... so I'm kind of hoping they *don't* announce that the 6.4L will be 10% better than the 6.0L because we can't take another drop in fuel efficiency in these things!

The 6.0's that ran right and were NOT flashed did get slightly better but the ones running badly or once flashed did not do better. My 03 expedition could do 17-19 on the highway but my 04 F-250 did pretty much 16 at the very best and more like 15 and that was highway with no towing.

Didn't meet emissions specs either.
Easier to get better MPGs if you are allowed to cheat the EPA.
The new 2008 emissions spec requires a richer burn (at least part of the time) to burn off the gunk in the particulate filter. Also, the burn is cooler to limit NOX emissions.
I guess Star Wars technology can deliver better emissions AND better fuel economy, but I am skeptical that will be accomplished right out of the box in 2008. Maybe after a few years, like with gassers.
Of course, Star Wars technology still can't keep the tiles glued onto the space shuttle.

I haven't seen any in-depth study of that, but my impression is that the fuel involved in the DPF regen cycle is in the level of noise compared to the overall fuel consumption. It doesn't happen very often, and just happens briefly. So these trucks may very well get even worse mileage from all the new pollution controls, but not really for that specific reason.

I haven't seen any specifics either. We will all just have to wait and see.
