6.4L Power Stroke Engine and DrivetrainDiscussion of the 6.4L Power Stroke diesel engine and drivetrain in the 2008 Super-Duty trucks. No gas engine discussion allowed except on transmissions and drivetrain that pertain to all models. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 6.4L Power Stroke engine.
This is a spreedsheet I put together to see the difference in the fuel expense between the V-10 and the 6.4. Enter the numbers in the yellow boxes. Enter the gas and diesel prices in your area and then enter the miles per gallon you think the V-10 will make and the miles per gallon you think the 6.4 will make. From what I have gathered from this board I think the V-10 avg. MPG would be 11 unloaded and 16 for the 6.4 unloaded. If you dissagree with me enter what you think is correct.
Sounds cool, but the link is not working, not for me anyway..

Crodad, with your spreadsheet open you need to go to the "Share" tab for the spreadsheet and under "Advanced Options" click the box by "Anyone can view this document at:". There will be a link there that you can paste to this thread.

Thanks Doc. I think I have it now. Give it a try.

Where i live, "oregon", Diesel is 60 cents more than gas. Also, I believe we pay more for the diesel engine up front. Should'nt we consider that in the pay back?
Crodad, I sent you an Excel file for Ford dealers from a few years ago that creates graph showing how many miles are required to break even with gas vs. diesel. You enter engine upcharge costs and costs of oil changes and frequency too.
Bob

Thanks Bob,
I got it. Much better than mine since it takes into account the difference in price of the engine and the oil changes in addition to the fuel.

So, whats the verdict? How many miles for payback do you come up with? Last time I did the calculations, it came out to well over 100,000 miles. Don't forget resale value though. You won't make up the entire cost of the diesel option, but you should be able to recover a good chunk of it. These calculations make my head hurt because there are two very big wild cards that are hard to pin down. Fuel economy and diesel fuel vs. gasoline prices.

Using the file That I got from Bob, It comes up to about 65,000 miles to break even. Using 17 mpg for diesel and 10 for gas.

When I bought my truck I went through this calculation ad nauseum. No matter what I did it showed a payback in excess of 180K miles, and that was when the prices were a lot closer together. Fluctuations in price made a bigger difference then because they were a higher percentage of the fuel cost. Today an increase (either fuel) makes less of an impact - a $0.10 increase on $2.79 is a smaller percentage than a $0.10 increase on $1.59.
I'm getting a bit better than 12 mpg avg in 60K miles of V10 ownership. I've logged every drop of fuel put into this truck since it was new, so I've got a great source of reliable mpg data. At that rate and the reported 14-16 of the 6.4's it will never payback at current fuel prices. Use 12 instead of 10 and you'll see a very different breakeven point.
I don't know if the new V10's are doing as well as mine with fuel consumption. I think 17 avg for a 6.4 is a bit of a stretch. I'd believe 15, maybe could be talked into 16...
The days of justifying a diesel with fuel savings are over until the prices of the engines come down or the mpg's go up. Raw torque, machismo or too much money in your wallet can justify it, but cost savings won't cut it.
Resale is a slippery slope, too. Anyone want to gamble and buy a used 6.0 ? Not me. There's so many factors in the resale calculation that it's really tough to come up with anything meaningful. If the 6.4's stay as reliable as they've been so far it may be an easier call, but the biggest factors are condition and configuration of the truck.
