I have noticed over the last couple of days where I am fogging the area with grey smoke again and than it goes away. This morning, it was about 35 degrees, I started the truck, let it warm up for about 5 minutes or more and than got on the highway and it blew grey smoke for about 20 seconds and than cleared up. The truck seemed to be in a regen cycle when I got in it so is this some sort of overfueling causing this or what. No check engine lights or anything.
Anyone else seeing this? It only seems to happen from a point when I am either idling or stop and go type driving to a transition to either pulling or highway type driving. Probably will call the dealer and get it in!
Thanks!

I think I too, would take it in for a checkup. I have not had any smoke issues but do have a minor fluctuating idle on cold morning first starts. Goes away quick. Going to plug in the block heater tonight and see if it goes away. I would see a bit of gray smoke on cold mornings with my 6.0 but it would quickly clear up. Out in Casper where it was pretty cold in the morning, I did not have any issues.
Nate, have you seen this in your continuing research or does your 6.4 have the issue?

CaptSkup, I also have the fluctuating idle on cool/;cold morning starts. Mine smoothes out when it goes into high idle. I have been meaning to post about the cold start idle but had to respond when I saw your post. Anybody else have the fluctuating idle on cold start?
Back to the OP, I do not have any white smoke at any time.
Look, it is very simple, the truck goes into regen before the cat is up to temp and when fully lit the smoke goes away. Mine did it this morning . . . for the 5th time.
Not to discount your theory on the cat not being up to temp, but wouldn't every Ford tech tell us that if it were true. Also why then are these trucks losing some serious power when it happens? Aren't these trucks supposed to be doing a regen only when the entire exhaust is up to temp? My truck only seems to do this when it comes off the interstate and is then accelerated from a stop. I continue to be shocked that Ford doesn't have a better explanation for this problem.
Had the same thing happen to me last week. Buried the guy in the next lane. But the truck never missed a beat and worked just fine.

Mine has ONLY made smoke when it wasn't up to operating temp. Most of my other regens were smoke free.
Dog, I have a theory with your experience. Pulling off the interstate is a condition where the engine is at low power, still pumping lots of air and little, if any, fuel being scheduled. I don't have a pyrometer on my '08 but from my other Diesels I'd often see 225-275 degree exhaust temperatures when pulling off. That COULD cool the cat to below light-off temperature. <==theory only
Stalwart, Interesting Theory. Is it the cat or the DPF that is getting too cool? Would that also account for why I experience the problem more often in the rain? Any thing I can or should do about it?
DogDoc, the rain would certainly lower the surface temperature of the cat but I'm unsure if it would have a significant effect on the reaction surfaces. Also consider that this engine is throttled (as I recall) during regen to limit incoming air and allow for higher temperatures into the cat and DPF. It may just take 15-20 seconds for the exhaust to reach a light off temp for the EXTRA fuel being scheduled. The extra fuel would cause a cooling effect in the exhaust stream.
I usually do the following when it happens . . . laugh uncontrollably, as all the cars scatter to avoid the stinky smoke.
