6.4L Power Stroke Engine and DrivetrainDiscussion of the 6.4L Power Stroke diesel engine and drivetrain in the 2008 Super-Duty trucks. No gas engine discussion allowed except on transmissions and drivetrain that pertain to all models. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 6.4L Power Stroke engine.
I think the Biggest trouble has been Fuel in the oil, due to job 1 High Press Fuel Pump casting and or injectors. Radiators have been trouble some for many Job 1 Trucks too. Other then that just little stuff from what I hear.
Guys are pushing 500 HP now with these trucks in stock form and 700 plus with injectors and some other mods.
Diesel Power mag is going to be doing an article about the 6.4L in the Next couple mouths!
I own 3 of these.1) job 1,1)-job 2 and 1 )job 3.My Job 1 is in the shop now for the second radiator replacement. This truck has a little over 60,000 miles. The dealer told me the second radiator was NOT covered? But they are making it right...NO COST TO ME!.My job 2 has had 1 radiator at 31,000 miles, and my job 3 only has about 4000 miles.
Job 3, 2100 miles, just had radiator replaced due to leak at left lower corner. I don't think the radiator problem is solved yet. I guess it's possible that my truck could have gotten one of the earlier faulty ones, who know's?

Took delivery of my JI F250 05/07 and now have +30K mi. O defects and the best damn truck I've ever owned. Milage is what it is and ya can thank the EPA for that. I got a feeling that they are going to slap more crap on the newer ones so glad I bought the 08.

The reason I get so riled up over a transmission is that Chevy has completely done away with manual tranny's behind their diesel engine- seems as though they think it's too powerful to put a clutch behind it. In my opinion- there are not enough Chevy customers buying manual transmission trucks- so it is not worth their money to re-tool the assembly line to make those few that will sell. My friend bought a Chevy gas truck in '02, and the manual tranny was actually a $1500 option! I HATE automatic transmissions, and if Ford goes the same route Chevy has, I'll be driving something else in the future, and the thought of that makes me sick! Don't get offended- every time someone on this forum calls me a dinosaur for driving a stick, it ruffles my feathers- nothing personal.

The only problems I have seen with the 6.4 are:
-Leaking radiators (hopefully fixed with new venturi "t-fitting")
-Chafed or chewed up pressure control valve and volume control valve wiring harnesses
-Cracked fuel injectors
-Sticking fuel injectors
-Exhuast leak at the turbo downpipe gasket
The biggest problem that causes the most damage is the leaking radiator. The low coolant can cause one or both EGR coolers to burn up, dumping coolant in the engine, bending a rod or breaking the crank. Low coolant can also cause extreme cavitation in the front cover wearing a hole in it, dumping coolant in the oil. Also the smallest particle seems to cause a fuel injector to stick which will cause a no start. No more blown head gaskets due to the removal of the rocker box the 6.0 has. The rocker box is a big aluminum washer in between the head bolt. The 6.4 dosen't have this, its iron to iron.
