Help - 6.4 starts then dies

Hey everyone. I need some help. The truck is a 2008 F250 Lariat 6.4 Job 2. We had to abandon it 100 miles from home tonight. It was running fine before the incident.

We went outside to start it again after driving it 100 miles and making a couple stops that day, it will start and idle (pretty low - 4-500rpms) for a few seconds and then dies. Immediately we suspected fuel filters, so we replaced both in the parking lot. That did not take care of the issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions? The dealer in this town was absolutely no help. They said they could maybe get it in the shop and a few days to look at it - in the mean time we had $50,000 + MSRP boat anchor. It's in relatively cold weather: 5 to 10 degrees F, but it's used to that.

Maybe your HFCM died. Check for codes!

Our dealership has not seen a ton of these towed in, but have had a fwe here and there.

A few have been towed in with bad EGT sensors in the exhaust (mostly job 1)

Also a couple with turbos, but those had tons of smoke blowing out the exhaust.

They have had problems with EGR valves, but I'm not sure could or would cause it to stall if the truck had been running for awhile

Best of luck!

Sorry, after reading your post again, I'm thinking EGR valve. Then again, just a guess from a parts guy

They aren't as bad as the 6.0s, but some do have a problem with getting stuck. It seems like we have the most problems with those here in the cold MN winters

Alright - so is there anything that can be done to it short of towing it in?

(and this is in ND)

Sorry, as far as I know its getting towed

If it is a EGR valve, these are a not fun to remove. Everything is right up on top the engine, but many of them are getting stuck inside the housings

As much as you'd like to get it going again, best to just let the dealer take care of it, especially if its under warranty

only other suggestion I would have is to diconnect the batteries for a few and then put them back on and give it a shot. Gonna need a tow.

It's been towed. What a pain. We'll see what dealer has to say.

Did they give you the new style one? New style does not have coolant line going to it. Suppose to be better...must be because I have not heard of anyone having an issue with the newer style.
