I'm guessing that the low sulphur is for canada. I don't think we have low sulphur diesel (yet) I was actually wondering what they were going to do up here.
Actually most of the diesel available in Canada is Ultra low sulphur.
I am interested in using high sulphur from our construction site, as we pay only 70 cents/L. Not to mention higher performance from higher sulpher content.
Ultra low sulphur diesel has been available in Canada since October 2006. I believe you will find that it is the law that all pumps selling diesel for highway vehicles must sell the new ULSD grade of fuel. The following link may help and I am sure a search will find others. http://www.cantruck.com/news/news/20...oadSulphur.pdf

Higher sulfur does not = higher performance. Sulfur is just in the fuel and it's expensive to get it out. Back when nobody cared, they didn't bother. Now that it will mess up emissions controls, they are getting almost all of it out. (I believe the interim step of removing some of the sulfur was for other pollution reasons such as reducing acid rain?)
So sulfur itself is a complete don't-care as far as the engine is concerned. It has some bad effects so they're getting rid of it. (The *process* they use to get rid of it can also reduce the fuel's lubricity, not the lack of sulfur itself, so they will be adding lubricity enhancers back in of course.)

I thought running higher sulpher diesel in an 08 would clog up the DPF etc, causing the need for regen more often leading to other problems and so on ........
Bare with me, this whole diesel thing is 1 week old to me.

Actually, the Cetane number of ULSD is higher than the higher Sulfur stuff. You may lose a miniscule amount of mileage, but should not lose any performance. Your engine should run cleaner and maybe even longer.

I realize running dyed fuel is illeagal, not what I intend to do. I want to configure my truck to run high sulphur for the sole purpose of saving 30 cents a liter (over 30$ a tank).
Thanks for all the replies

Too late, already got an 08 SWB supercab. Its not a dumb question. The manual states that the motor can be configured to run higher sulpher diesel, I just wanted to know if anyone knew how.
I might be interested in that too. Here in N. Minnesota, more than half our gas stations don't have ULSD yet. The big refinery in Superior, WI (where most of our fuel comes from) got an exemption from having to produce ULSD until 2010. So, the only ULSD we are getting here is coming via pipeline...this sucks. I guess I am glad I haven't pulled the trigger yet. That is unless, I can burn the higher sulphur stuff...
I am going to make a few phone calls tomorrow and get to the bottom of this.... I will be sure to post what I dig up. If you look in the 6.4 diesel manual, it says you can do it, just not how.
FWIW, the sulphur isn't the problem... the soot that it produces is and it isn't a problem for the way the motor is "configured"... it is a problem for the exhaust treatments. The DPF is going to get the hardest hit (and you can bet the warranty nazis are going to be looking at those) followed by the EGR and VGT and, somewhere in there, probably the EDOC and the DOC.
All of these devices are going to depend on fuel with reduced particulate emissions to start with.
AFAIK, "high" sulphur content is diesel fuel hasn't been around for quite some time. Low sulphur fuel has but, in Canada anyway, is not permitted for production at this time.... LSD fuel is regulated at 500PPM sulphur maximum. ULSD fuel is regulated at 15 PPM max.... After that, we depend on vendors having at least a vestige of integrity.
The US is actually the north American leader in emissions reduction and many Canadian provinces lack even "anti-tampering" laws let alone any real clean air testing. I'm not a tree-hugger though I believe in moderation and responsibility.
