Re: horses mouth

Just a little info about the particulate traps. Mercedes tried one on their 3.0L turbo engine in 1987. It was a disaster. It was placed directly at the output of the exhaust before the turbo. It plugged a lot and burned up turbos and melted pistons and cracked heads. They came out with a fix that replaced it with an up-pipe and then installed a catalytic converter downstream. I am sure that all the other manf. were watching this and are still keeping it in the back of their plans. BTW, the hotrod boys over in Finland are using this same engine to achieve up to 500hp. Crazy for a 3 liter I would say. And an aluminum head to boot.

Re: horses mouth

If that is the case though, I have absolutely no respect for engineers. I had very little respect to start with,

I don't either, if they can't engineer a motor that you can drop the oil pan out of without pulling the engine out, how can they engineer the real technical stuff right. I think that FOMOCO is supid for rishing anything on these motors. Oh, and Ford doesn't own Cummins. My two cents.

Re: horses mouth

You have to pull the engine on the 7.3 to get the oil pan off. My favorite way is to pull the cab, undo the motor motor mounts and lift it up with a cherry picker and service it that way.

Every single Toyota truck chassis ever built requires engine removal to remove the oil pan too.

In fact, why is having to pull the motor to repair/replace the oil pan such an issue? Your either replacing a leaky gasket which doesn't really occur anymore because they use sealer instead of gaskets and much higher quality gaskets on those that do. If you have to remove it for any other reason the engine is going to need be replaced anyway unless you somehow know of a technique to machine the crank with the engine installed in the truck.

I think the engineers would be stupid if they built the engine to accomodate ease of removal of such an infrequently serviced item.

It makes sense to engineer the chassis as efficient as possible.

Not true. I've pulled the pan twice on my 92 Toyota 4x4 w/o removing the engine. It's a job, but doable. And it's easy on a 4x2.

Hey now not all engineers are idiots. There are a few down here where I work, but most of them are top notch. Of course the typical outcome is the engineers are ordered to do stupid stuff by stuf mangers, been there fought that.

You had to pull it twice because you damaged the gasket reinstalling it because you didn't pull the motor.

I bet you also like doing to the job twice.

Pulling the engine or cab takes what? 1.5 hours? Then everything is right there and you don't have to fight anything......And you can do the job right...the first time.

Gee, I can't image why engineers never bother posting information on forums

But we all knows how to make it mo' better so no need.

Hey, do you know when the next meeting is for the Flat Earth Society? I forgot to write it down.

Nope... I pulled the pan on two separate occaisions for two separate reasons. I never did have a gasket fail and I never had a pan leak. Truck still keeps doing its thing... I actually use it to plow snow. I thought I'd kill it the first year, but this will be the 4th winter I've used it for plowing.

Re: horses mouth

the 6.0 VGT doesn't have a wastegate

Cummins, of all, was the first to implement cooled EGR on commercially available diesel engines, aside the fact that the 5.9 in the Dodge Ram, never had it.

Re: horses mouth

Actually, some 12-valve 5.9 Dodge Rams did have EGR. I don't remember exactly which model years, but they were CA vehicles - so 1998 and earlier!

Re: horses mouth

I know a guy who knows a guy that talked to some chick at a garage sale who had a sister that had a one night stand with a guy that talked to a guy on the bus that once drove a Ford truck, and it sounds like Ford is going to be bringing back the old 6.9l diesel since it is .5 bigger than the proposed 6.4. They are also going to be using quad turbos since they want to be twice as good as any twin turbo engine out there. This is an indisputable firm source, so we may as well close the 6.4l forum down now
