6.4L Power Stroke Engine and DrivetrainDiscussion of the 6.4L Power Stroke diesel engine and drivetrain in the 2008 Super-Duty trucks. No gas engine discussion allowed except on transmissions and drivetrain that pertain to all models. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 6.4L Power Stroke engine.
How many people are reluctant to buy a 6.4L with the 6.7L on the horizon?
I read here that Ford is scheduled to debut its own diesel engine (6.7L V-8) in 2010 or 2011. This means the 6.4L Powerstroke will be scrapped just three years into its model run.
Anybody here adjusting their purchasing because of this? Personally, I don't think I could spring for a new Super Duty with a 6.4L knowing in two years the engine goes by-by.

That kind of logic will never allow you to buy a new truck. There's always something new on the horizon.

Anybody here rethinking their requirements with crude oil at $135 a barrel?
Life is full of "what ifs"... My very first "music" purchase was a 78. next was 45s and LPs then 4 tracks.. next was 8 tracks... the cassettes and CDs...
I have a PC on my desk... It was obsolete the day I bought it.
If I was worried about "what's on the horizon", I'd be looking for todays tunes on 78 rpm records....
Wierd stuff... I see lots of people worried about "resale value". If you buy new, you'll take a crap-kickin' on depreciation. Me? I'm going to buy what I want to drive. Worrying about resale value might put me in something I don't like. Call me crazy - it's all about ME. I'll deal with whatever happens from it later...
Say what you guys want, but why is it that Ford is the only Manufacturer who is going through engines like Liz Taylor goes through husbands?
GM has had the same basic diesel since '01. Dodge has had just two diesels since '89 (and the Cummins meets 2010 emissions already, so it'll be around long after the 6.4L).
Ford? Starting in 2010-11, it'll be on its fourth diesel in seven years!

Whether the "Scorpian 6.7" replaces the 6.4 in future years is the least of my worries. So what if the 6.4 gets replaced in a few years. I don't give a thought that the Duramax or Cummins has been around for a long time, I don't care much for the Dodge or Chevy/GMC trucks that the engine carries. If indeed the SuperDuty does comes with a new 6.7 engine some day, and it turns out to be somehow better, than I may buy it. The 6.4 is turning out to be an excellant engine, it does everything I ask it to do, plus it is carried by the best heavy duty pickup on the market. When I buy a truck or car, resale value is not a determining factor. Ride, comfort, convenience, efficiency and how the vehicle strikes me in the looks department are what I am shooting for. If Ford did not update their trucks, go for the best items available to stuff in them, then I would not have anything to look forward to.

Here is a thought.
International had/has better success with the 6.0 and 6.4 than did FoMoCo. Logic would then dictate that it was something Ford is doing as far as changes to design/uses, that is causing some of their problems. That being said, what are the chances that a "TOTAL" FoMoCo diesel will be a beaming success?
I think I would rather see an engine designed and built(and not changed from the OEM initial design) by a company established and respected for diesel engines.
Just a thought. I'm probably wrong!

Amen! I love my Duramax and weighing future costs on the possibility of urea injection to meet emissions on the Dmax and probably the Scorpion. I'll probably be driving the already compliant 6.7L Cummins. I'm not about a cool package, I'm about a reliable, cost efficient vehicle which Ford has not built in quite some time.

Even with all the issues the 6.0 had, and the current 6.4 issues, I have my doubts Ford will build a better mousetrap. GM and Dodge couldn't get it right. Enter Isuzu and Cummins. International has been around the block once or twice. Whats interesting is that the IH trucks using some of the same powerplants don't have as many issues as the Ford trucks. Seems like on any of the big 3, once the factory epa mandated equipment has been round filed and the regen programs have been sent on their way, they all run well and get decent mpg.
One of two things. be happy with what you have or " what if " your self crazy. Don't let thing get in your way of enjoying life no matter how you got there or what the cost of fuel was to get there the point is your there, take it all in life is short.

Yea, but I am going out to the shop right now, start my 6.4, turn on the heated seat and go to work with a smile on my face. Today.
When the new diesel comes out, my 08 will have so many miles on her it will be good for scrap.
I read somwhere that Ford is one of the world leading manufacturer of diesel engines, but of course those are 4 cylinder 2 liter engines made in and for European cars.
But reading some of the European message boards I see the same complaints, the DPF on those cars are hurting their fuel economy and they have problems with regenerations. Until the engine manufacturers learn to deal with the emmision requirement the diesels engines will not get the mpg they used to.

Well if that is your logic then look at this. I had 6 GM vehicles before I bought my 2008 Ford. As far as reliable, this Ford has been in the shop 1 time (ONCE) since I owned it. My first 2000 and then my 2002 Chevy's, at least 5 or 6 times each (both gassers), then 1 2003 H2 and 1 2004 H2, both in the shop at least 5 times each. My 2004 Duramax was in the shop 9 times and my 2006 Duramax was in the shop 12 times...
I though that trading the 04 for the 06 would be better and it was in the beginning and then the same GM issues as always and no fix or dealer would not do anything about them and I went to top of the ladder with GM on both vehicles.
I have had only one issue with Ford and they came and got the truck from me, brought me a replacement 08 F250 Diesel to drive while they had mine and even washed, waxed and changed the oil all under warranty..
So, once again back to the Ford, only ONCE in the shop... So it has by far been the most cost efficient vehicle I have owned and the MOST RELIABLE..
To each their own though, some have good luck and others get lemons, so who knows.. But I do know that I have found a truck brand for life now and I will stick with it as long as it holds true.

Personally, I wish Ford could finally settle on a diesel engine and stick with it...after all, the other manufacturers have. My '03 is (and has been) a fantastic truck and I consider myself fortunate to have found it new on the lot and purchased it.
