Howling

I have a 2008 F-350 which makes a loud howling noise between 55 and 60, anything below or above it stops. It stops on decelleration or when put in neutral. Any ideas.
Thanks

Happened to our '08, and after many trips to the dealer, it couldn't be fixed. The warranty was out too, so we were dumping thousands into it. In the end it was discovered that the exhaust manifold was warped. The solution, a new truck. The diesel tech made a deal with the salesman and the GM to get us into a new truck at a good price and he would fix the old truck up to get it to auction. They matched our payoff on the old truck and got us in a new '09 below invoice.

What you're hearing is not good. I hope you're still under warranty. If not, be prepared to pay big time.

The rear end was changed about 1500 miles ago {ring and pinion} but the mechanic says he dose not think its coming from there. Any other thoughts or ideas out there. Truck has 34700 miles on it.

No, it wouldn't come from there. It's the sound of your exhaust pressure building up and escaping when it shouldn't, ala exhaust manifold. At least that was the case with ours.

You're still well under warranty, have your mechanic check the exhaust manifold. Take him on a ride along so he can hear it. Out of warranty we were quoted around $2500 to replace the manifold.

Service Tech called today and said there is a TSB for this problem and its the drive shaft, so they are going to change it. Hope this fixes it.

Drive shaft (howling).. I wonder how it would manage to make that kind of noise. I don't know if the howling you hear is closer to a whine. The reason: This kind of noise only between 55 and 60 or thereabouts and no noise when decelerating sure sounds like a differential problem (too much play). Mine does this and had been doing it from the beginning. Just got a bit stronger over time. Ford did not want to change the rear end under warranty and I did not press the issue - simply got used to it. Mine is an F550 with DANA limited slip 1:4.88. I suppose that heavy duty rear end is likely to be a bit noisy.

Well they replaced the drive shaft today and no more howling noise. I never would have suspected the drive shaft. The new one looks like it has a balancer at the rear, odd looking.. They fixed one problem and created another. They put a good size dent and scratch in my drivers door and now it has to go to their body shop monday.
