No gas engine discussion allowed except on transmissions and drivetrain that pertain to all models. but this new engine looks very interesting. I see a ton of potential here for performance minded types. Much more than what Ford owners have been saddled with in the past.
I see some good thingys in my crystal ball for the go fast addicted.

And in my crystal ball I see a lot of owners footing the bill if there are any issues after they are modded, Ford is really starting to play hard ball about this stuff on the 6.0s.
I will find out more next week, it's 6.4 school time. From what I have read so far there isn't much you can do to mod them but I am sure the aftermarket will come up with something.
Far as I see it we went from the six hoe to the six whore.

Will a exhaust mod be worth the cost of a void warranty.
If FORD is having trouble with warranty pay out from NAVISTAR now.
All bets are off on the new 6.4.
We will be replacing several trucks in the next year and they will
remain stock.

I'm curious about those tips.............. As I understand it, they are there to dissipate heat during the regeneration process..... I'm not an engineer, so perhaps I don't understand this very well, but I don't see how they are going to affect the exhaust at any point prior to them... I can see where they might be helpful in preventing a burned leg, but since the exhaust is basically being forced out past them, I can't see how they could help anything prior to them.....
Can anyone shed any light on this??

Your statement is absolutely correct. The tips are to add cool air to the exhaust exiting the tailpipe and the only reason is for safety and they do not affect the performance of the rest of the system. As FMT stated, many of us will be completing the training on the 6.4L soon with classroom instruction beginning this week. I am fortunate to have gotten in for the last week of January. This is a MAJOR change for us technicians to have training begin before the product launch. Mark my words gentlemen, this engine "will separate the men from the boys!"

Well, if I'm correct there, then how would changing out that tip adversely affect the warranty?? I could see it saving a lawsuit from some mope who got too close to the truck, but if it doesn't have any affect on the performance of the system, then it should be fair game to anyone wishing to change it........
BTW, congrats on getting the training ahead of time!! I'm sure that will save a lot of frustration on the part of techs and owners alike!!

AND, the word on the street is that the new 6.4 computer will be able to detect even the slightest mod and thus void the warranty, or at least make the owner prove non-negligence. Too many issues with the 6.OSHI# to even think about mods on this new engine. Ford doesn't even care about us "mod apes" and what we can do to blow off a Chebby or Rammer, not even in the picture. So, I forsee Banks, Edge, etc., going for major mods on the new Nav units, Mega-fast side mirror motors, Super fast electro-seat motors, and an IN-CAB AIR FILTER!!

By that, do you mean separate the ones who have the cash to pay for the added repair costs associated with a more complex engine from those who choose to settle for less (but still adequate) performance and lower repair bills?
We're getting to the point where it doesn't make sense to keep a truck anymore once it is out of warranty. If folks can handle a continuous $500/mo drain on their pocketbook just to drive one of these things with full warranty, that's their business; I just don't see how twin turbos and added complexity in general on a stock daily driver could be a good deal for the owner once the truck leaves warranty.
Haven't seen the truck yet, but can imagine the warranty claims when twin turbos fail because the owner put an aftermarket air filter on that left a lot to be desired in the filtration department...
Are GM and Dodge going twin turbo? What about big rig makers? Shouldn't have to twin it to be EPA legal, IMHWO.

The exhaust tips have cutouts/fins proximal to where it exits. Ambient air is drawn into the exhaust, mixing with it, and effectively lowers the temperature to that of current gas exhaust (which is still quite a bit hotter than current diesel exhaust temps).

GM and Dodge still have singles. CAT has twins on their ACERT engines.

I believe that Doc was referring to those working on or repairing these beasts.... The 6.0 is a complex package... with what little we have seen of these motors to this point, this makes the 6.0 look like a tinkertoy.
Unfortunately, I have to settle for a late February chair in class in order to move one of our line techs to an earlier time slot... Still, part of my day (and too much of my evenings) is spent poring over the 08 shop manuals as well as the "6.4 Bible" and, with the help of thetwo techs I have going to school this month, I should have a bit of a handle on these by the time I get to school.
These new trucks have a Coordinated Module Programming architecture based on a new (to us Ford techs) protocol. It is nearly obsoleting a scan tool that is barely two years old. The engine has a host of new sensors as well as strategies and parameters....
Classroom time can only instill in us the basics... for a tech to consistantly deliver meaningful diagnosis of concerns and effective repairs, he will have to be savvy, talented and able to learn....
