4.88's kill the mileage it would seem. I avg 13-14 around town and 17 on the highway at 65. Perhaps if mileage is a big issue to you and understandably so, you might look for something with 3.73's in it.
I would sure sell it! I'd get a Smart Car and a couple of tents, a table for the camp stove, and one of those folding stools with the potty bags. You'll have everything your 450 and the camper now has!
You can tie the cots on top.

Actually ,it's a 550. I couldn't get the 17,950 GVWR with the F450 pickup.
This is going to sound kind of harsh but I've had a bad day. How the #@*& should we know if you should sell your truck. It's your truck, your money, and your life. You have over 3200 posts and are suprised your new truck only get's this kind of mileage? Where have you been, camping?
Yes, I really like the outdoors.
I'm not sure how you should know. I'm just seeking opinions.
I hear from the Dodge website that I can get at least 15mph from the new more powerful Dodge Cummins diesel engine.
If I had a dollar for every one of my posts, I'd have money for an overdrive unit.
I'm hearing the same 15mpg numbers from some friends who have the new Cummins. Wouldn't a 4500 or 5500 series Dodge work? I don't know what their specs are but they should be comparable to the 550. Sorry about the rant, I was going to delete that post when I came back to it.

If you are getting 10mpg with a 5000lb camper on you are doing fine. I only get 11 mpg with my 350 dually and 4.3 gears. The 4.88 gears was a mistake if you are not towing. However the small difference in fuel economy will never recover the loss of trading in a new truck, especially after you put a deck on the new one. Just my 2 cents.
I strongly suspect the OP is having a bit of fun with the readers. That or he has has been spending some time with Mr. Daniels and Mr. Beam. Dodge cab chassis 4500/5500 with 4.88 gears ain't getting any better milage than the Furds.

My Buddy is running a 4500 Dodge with 4:88's.....vary comparable to my PSD rig. He bought it 30 days before I got my Ford and has about 1500 more miles on it than my rig.
We drive just about the same kind of roads to and from work.
Same weather.
We are both very anal about keeping tabs on our fuel.
For the last 60 days we have averaged between .2-.5 difference in fuel milaege.
13-14 MPG mixed city/Highway driving....
WOW!! Is that amazing or what?

That's the fuel mileage I'd expect with that rig, assuming you drive it to keep up with traffic. You could probably tow a 10,000 pound trailer in addition to the camper, and still get about the same fuel mileage.

Should I sell the truck? What should I get?
Dumb idea. Any truck capable of hauling that camper in the style you're used to won't get any better mileage. So work on improving the fuel mileage with the truck you have.
If you don't tow over about 10,000 pounds with the camper loaded, then the 4.88 gears are too short for your needs. Invest in 4.30 ring gears and pinions. That about a 12 percent change in the RPM needed to cruise at highway speeds. So if you normally cruise at 2,500 RPM, then with the 4.30 gears you'd be at 2,200 RPM at the same speed. That gotta save some fuel if you're not towing anything very heavy.
If you do tow something heavy in addition to hauling the camper, then invest in a double overdrive unit, either U.S.Gear or Gear Vendors, to use when not towing.
Don't expect either option to pay for itself with improved fuel mileage. You'll get better mileage when not towing, but probably not enough better to ever pay for the mod - unless you drive over a hundred thousand miles per year. But if better fuel mileage is your goal, and return on investment (ROI) is not a biggie for you, then I'd probably go for the double overdrive or the 4.30 gears - or both.
ROI should not be a factor. You have around 100 grand tied up in a depreciating asset, and you'll have one heck of a negative ROI in that rig. So a little more negative ROI shouldn't matter.
Or look at it this way: Investing another $4k in your rig is only about four percent of the total cost of your rig. That's a drop in the bucket.

What kind of mileage did you really expect to get? Big trucks, pulling big loads do not get 20 MPG. I don't care if it's GM, Dodge or Ford. I think that many of us have to high an expectation on these trucks getting huge MPG numbers. still has the best truck out there.
