Initial acceleration lag..programmed in?

So I now have 350 miles on my 08..so I started to push it a little. First time I have floored it from a dead stop....almost nothing for a second or two..just very sedate aceleration...then bam...takes right off. I hesitate to call this turbo lag..feels more like the " fly by wire " go pedal is just programmed to take off easy? Getting into it once moving..seems very normal. This isn't a problem to me..am not drag racing..just curious if this is normal?

Also,,,hope fuel mileage improves..1st tank or so is 11.5 in stop and go city traffic. I have only percieved 1 regen so far..in my drive way...if it has regen'd while driving,,I didn't notice it. Very quiet...hard to tell it's not a gasser!

Re: Initial acceleration lag..programmed in?

All the drive-by-wire Powerstrokes have this thing where they hate to be suddenly floored; you'll get far faster takeoff if you ease into it just a tiny bit. I don't know if it's the engine, or the software. I could see the software designer thinking that a sudden swing from one extreme to the other on a pedal reading could be an error condition, so they'd want to debounce it a little longer to be sure it's real.

Or maybe they're just trying to simulate on old carb with a bad accelerator pump valve...

Re: Initial acceleration lag..programmed in?

I think what they are doing with the programming is to keep morons from slinging a drive shaft through the floor by repeatedly adding all the available power at once.

Re: Initial acceleration lag..programmed in?

Its to keep it from smoking during an over-fueling condition. By not allowing it to dump more fuel in than there is air to help combust it, the program keeps the truck from throwing clouds of black smoke.

My 05 6.0L does the same thing,I floor it & the truck just sits there for about 2-3 secs before it feels like moving!

Re: Initial acceleration lag..programmed in?

My '04 PSD doesn't respond if the go pedal is suddenly slammed all the way to the floor for a second or two. However, if I (flutter) the pedal just one or two times real gentle like and then give it the juice, the truck launches like a scalded cat. Just takes a split second to tap the throttle, seems to get the go factor going, and then she spools right up. I don't know why and I don't think it is turbo lag, because it only takes a split second, and she is off and running.

Dang, I thought Turbo Jr. was intended to eliminate that. My 04 does the same thing, yielding a scary moment or two crossing busy highways.

Just after tuneup, there seems to be no turbo lag - it deveops with milage.

Maybe you can do what I do - step on it then immediatley back off a time or two - turbo spins up and off she goes. Does that work on the 6.4?

Re: Initial acceleration lag..programmed in?

I can hammer the accelerator, and.. when the engine rolls on the coal, the rear tires will break loose and the truck launches, setting me back in the seat but... no black smoke, not a poof. You saying yours pours out the cloud?? Mine doesn't and acceleration is strong as hell. Could it be the Power Service I use?

Re: Initial acceleration lag..programmed in?

I use diesel kleen, maybe roll out is not a good term, i can get smoke though if i lay into it without any problem. It gets up and goes great too. I have never had it flashed for anything.

Major service - reflash maybe - whatever Ford has ready @ pit stop time, my beast seems young again.

Maybe it's just new oil & filters that makes it feel so good....

Re: Initial acceleration lag..programmed in?

Speaking of acceleration, any of you guys noticing any difference in the top speed of your truck prior to the reflash and after the reflash? I know bunch of you guys bump the limiter, so I figured someone might know. Anybody been able to get one over 85mph after the reflash?

Re: Initial acceleration lag..programmed in?

85 mph max? that's a dog. I think the old 03 6.0's could do about 98 with no chip in them and as fast as 140 with a chip.
