Truck just turned 81K miles. Last week, the check engine light came on for the first time ever. Nothing seemed out of place, truck had re-genned earlier that day, but was still driving good. I was about 4 hours from home hauling a 25' trailer. Stopped in at a dealer on the way, had him run a scan on the PCM. Came up w/ an intermittent bad signal from the #3 exhaust sensor. Of course - didn't have one. Cleared the code - said I should be ok to drive home. He was right... Took it to my dealer, gave them the invoice w/ the code that was pulled from the dealer the day before. Since the code was cleared, the dealer couldn't replicate the problem and send me on my way. Monday am, hooked up to my trailer again and headed down the road. Regen'd twice in an hour...not good. Then the dreaded engine light w/ "stop safely now" on the message center. Not good w/ a loaded trailer on an interstate during rush hour... 5 hours later - got it to the dealer. Called today and said that he replaced the #3 exhaust sensor, drove it 50 miles and it regen'd again. Now they are replacing the DPF. The pipes are still clean, were never black. I've never run anything but ULSD. Anyone else have this problem?

Just picked her up tonight. Brand new DPF, new #3 exhaust sensor. Tech drove it about 70 miles, said all was good, no regens, engine lights, etc... I didn't drive it 5 miles home and the "cleaning exhaust filter" popped up on the dash. Brand new DPF - I find it hard to believe that it needed "cleaning" already. I drove around til it went off, about 20 miles or so. I'll keep you posted. Thanks!

I thought the same thing... It regen'd 3 times in 230 miles yesterday and 4 times in roughly 300 miles today. Talked to the tech and he contacted Ford with my complaints. Evidently the latest re-flash which they had done to mine - causes these symptoms. It is "normal!" It sucks - truck is in regen more often than not, especially when towing. Hopefully they'll come out w/ a new one soon! This one really sucks.

This regen every 100 to 200 miles is BS and is costing all of us money we should be getting min 16 city and 20 plus highhway this is a state of the art engine and the EPA is not helping matters out at all by forcing the manufactures to add all of this emmission cr*p devices thats causes these and other trucks to burn more fuel not saving it,
who are the idiots, yes i am for not polluting so much but wasent that why they reformulated the fuel to ULSD ,I dont get it they took one of the two most important reasons to buy a diesel engine vehical not only do you pay for the engine upgrade dearly but now you burn twice as much fuel now ,
I know that this will be my last diesel truck that I will buy I might just try to sell it and keep my older 5.9 cummins that gets far better mpg then the newer trucks and it pulls everything i have and has never left me stranded on the road going on 11 years now ,my 6.4 has left me stranded 4 times in 1 1/2 years . just blowing steam .
I have a 2008 F-450 and yes the "cleaning exhaust" crap happens often but this past Saturday my motor started knocking extremely bad and after about a mile it locked up and literally blew all the oil out of the front main seal (front what I could see) and now I have a $55,000 truck with 20,300 miles on it sitting at a dealership in Hagerstown MD waiting to be looked at tomorrow. This truck has not even been put through anything it could have, hell I pulled a 8500lb toy hauler less then 200 miles and thats the only weight this truck has ever had on it. Any suggestions because I am demanding a new motor? Damn I wish this was the 7.3!!
Thank you,I actually ran across this site when looking for others with issues with their trucks and it seems to be a decent site and is actually formatted similar to a site I moderate on stocks and trading.
I actually spoke with the mechanic and service manager this morning when I rode out to Hagerstown Ford and the mechanic clearly told me the motor is blown and now they have to wait for a Ford Rep to come to their dealership and inspect it. I guess they should considering its a $17,000 motor. I just hope they step up and take care of the problem without causing me any grief. I also mentioned that I only get about 8 to 9mpg running light and towing nothing and the mechanic was shocked and stated I should be getting at least 12mpg. Its never gotten mileage that good since the day I bought it. I welcome any advice since this is the first "Big" truck I have owned, all others were 250's or 2500's and all gas.

well heres the virdict....
My 2008 Ford F-450 with 20,000 miles on it broke a crank shaft of course causing catastrophic damage internally. Apparently this really surprised the Ford motor company since they sent a rep to the dealership to confirm the diagnosis, they now have a complete new motor in transit to Hagerstown Ford for my truck. The mechanics are also shocked at this problem but according to them my truck will be completed by next Friday. I personally hope this is the end of my headaches with the truck.
I am not sure how many people here know whats involved with a motor replacement on these trucks because I wasn't at first, they actually have to pull the cab off the frame (although quite honestly thats not really a great task). It does make sense though because there is no way to replace anything under the hood of one of these monsters, theres simply no room at all

What did Ford and or the dealer say was root cause of broken crankshaft?

Sorry for your problems. Look at it this way you have a brand new engine that will last a long time. You just got a fluke with a broken crank.
Break this one in right. Take it easy for the first thousand miles no towing no cruise control. After a thousand work the poop out of it. I have a F450 get about 13-14 mpg empty (4.3 rear) and 8-9 mpg pulling a 14k fifth wheel. You have a heck of a truck for towing 25 foot trailer. You should get 16 mpg empty at 65 mpg hwy and 13 around town.

I am going to have to send my truck down to spend some time with your truck. I can't seem to break 12.5 mpg. My towing mileage is about the same though.
Maybe the hills I am pulling? Are you in the flats or the hills of GA?
I can't agree with you more, these trucks real nice to drive empty, but are AWESOME tow vehicles.
