Lost Power and Truck Barely Runs, Engine Light On.

I was running over to the DMW today and pulled away from a stop sign and the truck all of a sudden had NO Power. It still ran but I had to put the throttle to the floor to get moving. No noise's, or pops before or after.
I was low on fuel, around 1/8 tank. So the first thing I thought was maybe fuel filters?
Man I hope this isn't the start of bigger problems.

When you get down to the bottom of the tank it concentrates the dirt and more is picked up. I just changed my fuel filters and I was amazed at the crud that was in the frame mounted one where the water separator is. The upper filter wasn't very dirty.
Change fuel filters quick!

When the fuel level in your tank reaches around 15%, the PCM will derate the engine to protect high pressure fuel system components from being damaged from running low on fuel, as the fuel lubricates and cools these components. Hopefully that's all you have going on.

Why do some guys run their trucks so low on fuel? A 38 gallon tank with only 1/4 to 1/8th of fuel is not covering much of the bottom of the tank. Fuel pumps, filters, and tow trucks are pricey, fuel is cheap.

Not everyone has the 38 gallon tank. There are smaller sizes. Significantly smaller.

I'm not certain that running the fuel low causes that much of a problem, as our trucks are designed to run more roughly when low on fuel.

It sounds like the consensus is low fuel, but I'm not as certain as everyone else. The owner's manual doesn't explicitly say that you will experience a significant loss of power if low on fuel--it just says that its designed to run ROUGH. I'd rule out the filters and call the dealership after you get more information from everyone else here.

Thanks for the help guys. I mite run down and grab a few new filters and put them on.
I changed the one on top of the engine at my 5K oil change,(now at 7400) but I didn't change the one on the frame rails.
I read awhile back about the right way to change that one but can't find the thread again. Anybody got a link to that fuel filter change procedure?

The Dodge in my sig did this, turned out it was a plugged DPF. Now mind you I ran it on the highway, yada yada yada, never had a regen code and this happens. I'm not sure, but I believe that this technology is not ready for the general consumer and still needs more R&D.

Well I changed the lower fuel filter and it was clean and looked like new. So it's not fuel filters being clogged.
I was able to find the codes it's throwing out thru my Insight gauge.
P0404 exhaust gas recirculation range/performance. What ever that means.
And P1335 unknown.
So there's a problem somewhere. Now to get it to the shop and see what they can do with it.

I had seen this on a post a while back. One of the suggestions was a stuck open EGR. Keep us posted.

Here is the link Error code help P0404 and P1335

The original poster posted codes in another thread. Two codes, both related. It is in fact a stuck EGR.

Had nothing whatsoever to do with fuel filters or running the tank empty.

This truck is home. It runs very good. I think Dieselgem called it. It needed the latest flash that took care of it. I don't think they took anything apart. I'll give more feedback after the ride to work in the AM.
Just glad to get $50k back in one piece.

Hopefully it solved the issue Joe, besides that, how you liking the new truck? Mine's been good to me so far (knock on wood) but I only have 6500 miles on it.

Hey Jason. All seem's back to normal. I pulled the trailer home last night for a 4 day weekend trip and the truck was 100%. No doubt this is the nicest truck I've ever owned. People get in this thing and can't believe how nice they are.
