My Low Pressure Fuel Pump Failed,Dealer Acted Like It Was My Fault:Advice Please

My 2009 with 11,000 miles just quit like you turned off the key. At first I thought I may have run out of fuel cause I knew it was low and was going to refuel just down the road. I looked at the display and it said 39 miles to empty. I know for a fact it will run well beyond the distance to empty,so I felt satisfied I wasn't and idiot for running out of fuel. I am 53 and have never done that in my life.

Anyway had it towed to dealer. Picked it up and asked the mechanic what was wrong. He said I ran it out of fuel. Well,I did feel like an idiot then, but said,it said 39 miles to empty. I said If I ran out of fuel the gage must have crapped out cause I have run it lower than that with room to spare. He said DON'T DO THAT. I said I don't normally. Then he said we also had to replace the low pressure fuel pump. This was well into the conversation. I said so the pump was bad,he said yes. I said, well then that was the problem. He never said yes,

Was he implying running low on fuel could burn up the pump? And is the low pressure fuel pump a common failure? Help me out here guys.

nope, he was trying to lay blame on something that just failed. I normally fill up as soon as the message center hits 50 miles left, but I have run it down into the 20's before no problem Don't like to but I have.

There have been quite a few people who have run their tank down to 0 miles or close, to do the harpoon mod (requires dropping the tank). They still had a couple of gallons left, even at that reading. I don't think you did anything wrong at all.

Side note: anyone else notice when they fill up that the gauge doesn't go all the way up to full? Mine stops just before the needle touches the F's white line.... and i do top off.

Mine goes past the Full mark and I've heard of people running down to "zero miles to empty" without problems

Mine goes slightly past the full mark and I have run it down to 15 miles to empty. Didn't want to but was on an unfamiliar highway without a lot of stations carrying diesel.

I have and always run mine about 30 miles past the 0 to empty. Most of the time i fill it up when it says 50 to E and it only takes about 32gals. I get about 320 to 360 out of a tank hand calculated . Got the extended warranty so if it fails they can fix it tuck has 13k on it have had it for well over a year still driving old faithful 7.3.

LOL, are you making fun of me??

Seriously though, my gauge stops at the level that 2 days worth of driving would bring it down to, from full. Just seemed strange that it started all of a sudden, so I thought I'd ask.

nope, that is a true post. I was filling the truck, it clicked off. I put another 2.8 gallons in after that. Started the truck up, the gauge read full but the DD read 99.997

Oh ok... wasn't sure with the number you posted. 99.997 is pretty close to 100% though. Maybe if there were fewer decimals, it would have just rounded up or something. I feel like mine, where the gauge stops now, would be like 85-90%.

i had a chat with an old diesel mechanic at one of my local dealerships and he told me that the 6.4 have problems with the injectors letting oil past the oil rings and this lets the diesel into the oil. And he also told me that the low pressure fuel pump has also been an issue with the 6.4. He said that those are really the only two major problems with the 6.4. At the time he was actually working on one 6.4 where he had to replace the low pressure pump and he said that he would have to pull the cab.

The low pressure pump just takes a few minutes to replace. The high pressure pump is the one you need to pull the cab.
