Need de-ciphering on towing capacity

The specs say for a F 250 that the towing capacity is 5000Lb for a conventional( Class III receiver??) hitch???? Surely, I am not reading that correctly. Do you need that bulky PIA wgt distributing hitch with the chains etc to get higher capacity?

What would I need to tow a 6000 lb boat?

Re: Need de-ciphering on towing capacity

Greetings,

That is broken info I would have to guess.

I did not see anything that spec'ed conventional towing v/s 5th wheel, etc.

I can only assume it is much higher. I believe the F250 is ~12,500 lbs, so expect that or a slight improvement.

Peace and Blessings

Re: Need de-ciphering on towing capacity

i am guessing they are approximating that by tongue weight, 1000lb max usually, 20% to the tongue=5000lb capacity, boats are better balanced than that. however, about 80% of skid steer trailers are just now going to be legal with the 12,500lb hitch standard, the bigger bobcats with an attachment and trailer that we have around here are just over 11,000lb. it is real fun finding balls and receiver tubes rated over 10,000lb
