NEW 2008 F-250 TOWING

Im thinking of buying a 2008 F-250 4wd Crewcab diesel lariat shortbed. I have a 23' toybox trailer weighing about 10,000 pounds with the tanks full and all the toys in it. Here are my ?

1. Is this truck sufficient for the weight of the trailer ? ford has it rated conventional at 12,500 and is the stock 3.73 gearing ok?

2. Has anyone heard of any transmission overheating when towing especailly uphill. ( I experienced this with my 02 f-350 and the remedy was to install a oversize tranny cooler from a stock V-10.)

3.The truck I just sold was a 02 F-350 4wd deisel crewcab longbed and stock it had the worst handling, I mean if you hit a bump while going around a slight curve on the freeway you would almost bounce over into the next lane.( When I tested the 08 it did the same thing but on a slightly smaller scale.) I installed wider tires and lifted the front 6" and put new shocks on it and it did solve the problem but it also stiffend the ride so bad that it really sucked and it didnt tow good with all that accessorie crap. ( I really want to keep my new truck stock, I learned my lessons, this time I will trade the cool looks for performance. Any opinions?

Re: NEW 2008 F-250 TOWING

You won't be disapointed, 10,000 pounds seems awefully close to the maximum allowable trailer weight but trust me, you won't have a problem, that is what the manufacturer rates it at and that is the maximum they will say it can tow safely, most anyone in construction has pulled more weight than what the manufacturer rates it and the truck if driven the way you should when you have a heavy trailer. I have had all F350's so I know what you mean about bouncy, I believe you will be pleasantly surprised by the 08 F350's though, the ride is incredibly soft. My o4 F350 dually is a lot easier to control than my 01 shortbox srw. Have you testdriven an 08 F350? Either way, 10,000 pounds won't be a problem, heck, the F150'2 have a rating over 10,000lbs.

Re: NEW 2008 F-250 TOWING

My '04 tows a 12k fifth wheel so easily, gets great fuel mileage, power to spare. I can only hope my '08 will be as good. I doubt your truck will have any problem towing the trailer you are talking about. Only thing I would suggest is to buy the 350 instead, not much more money and has room to grow. Handling has never been an issue with my truck, just have to realize you are driving a high center of gravity almost 8,000lb truck.

Re: NEW 2008 F-250 TOWING

Your saying the o8 you drove did not handle well?
Mine is lifted 6" & running 35,s and handles and steers like a stock half ton, Ford has done thier homework on the 08, handles 100% better than my lifted 06 F350 4x4.

Buy the F350 - But remember - Stock Sucks !

Re: NEW 2008 F-250 TOWING

Greetings,

I can not imagine any diesel 3/4 ton or larger would have any problem towing your set up. And since 05 they ride and handle a lot smoother. I can only immagine the 08's are twice as good as the prev. generation.

I have heard of few to no Torqshift transmission and towing issues. Overheating or other. The TS is excellent.

Peace and Blessings

Don't let your imagination run away with you. There is no way, no kind, that the 08 is that much better.......period, what do you base such a remark on. Got to you at 12:45 AM? In that you have been ranting for 4 years now on how bad your 03 was, the new 08 would not have far to go to be 2 times better. Possibly my math is off?

Re: NEW 2008 F-250 TOWING

Having lived with a 01 F250 for 6 years, I don't think you'd have a problem. However, if I had to do it over again, I agree with the comment above & I'd get the F350 just so I could carry a little more weight in the box if I needed to. David

Greetings,

I think it is just perception. Wether it is on paper, good experiences or bad regarding 7.3, 6.0, 6.4.

My reply was fashioned to the original poster that was talking about a 7.3 and truck not really meeting his needs based upon weight, capacity, handeling, etc.

The math is not necesarily litteral. Regardless, give an Indy car 10 more HP than all others on the field? Is that twice as good? When no one else ever takes the prize money but that car it could be a 1000 times better.

And changes from a 7.3 to 6.0 to 6.4 do not just include 10 hp/trq improvements.

Peace and Blessings

The pull weight (10,000 lbs)is no problem; but, you might have a problem with payload? The payload on most CC 4x4 F250 is about 2,500 max and most F350 4x4 CC about 3,500 lbs. (the more equipement on the truck the more your payload goes down - moonroof, power back window, navigation, sound system, etc.)

I pull 8,500 lb boat, with 4 to 5 people; plus their gear "in" the truck, plus the 600 tongue load from the boat, so I am at the max of 2,500 payload on my F250 CC 4x4.

Strongly consider the F350 because of the payload. Other than that the two trucks are the same.

He had a bad experience 4 years ago with a 03 Excursion 6.0. The operative word(s) would be "4 years ago". Heck I had 2 blown engines and 2 blown trannies in a early 72 or 73 civic but guess what I sold it and got over it. I also got divorced 13 years ago and got over it. Most reasonable people would move on.

Re: NEW 2008 F-250 TOWING

I have both a F250 Super Cab 4x4 and a F350 CrewCab 4x4 (both 2003 6.0 long beds) both pull my 30', 9000# toyhauler fine. I just recently had an engine problem on the 350, but the tranny has never been an issue. They both have 3.73's and the 350 has 305/70/16E tires and 285/75/16 on the F250. I like the drive better on the 350 than the 250, although they arn't that much different. As for the tranny it has been great and a huge improvement over the E4OD's that were in my two prior Superduties (1999 & 2000) I think you'll like that combo.
