At first I got excited when I seen the title of your post, thinking that there was a real fix...
I never noticed any loss of power, but the cover is a major PITA to deal with in areas where it's 70F one day, and 25F + snowing the next.
Ford to fix this problem should look at how the aircraft industry handles intake icing.
Recip engines use ram air, filtered, just as the automotive industry does.
But on an aircraft engine, when the filter ices, a spring loaded door behind the filter opens so the engine can get air from under the cowl. The air is unfiltered, but that is ok since this happens at altitude where the air is clean.
This would not work on a truck engine as the alternate air would be dirty and damage the engine.
However, there should be room to put a smaller filter under the hood so that when the spring loaded door opens, the intake air would be filtered.
Power would be reduced, but that is better than coming to a halt in the middle of a storm.
If the weather is really bad, you don't need max power anyway, as speeds and hill pulling will be reduced anyway due to weather.
If I lived in snow country, I probably would have a shop cobble up something similar.
Picked up truck from ford they put a winter cover over the grill . You would think there would be a better fix than having to deal with this ugly black bandaid.
I agree. Nothing better than a $50k truck with a tarp strapped on the grill!!!! The TSB did state that "some" 6.4 liters would experience this when driving in heavy snow. Maybe we just got unlucky.....
I'm a atv rider and was wondering if there is a cover for these filters. In the atv scene a company makes a cover called Outerwear, covers the filter than you can remove it and clean it. Maybe it would restrict the air flow on these types of filters though. Does anybody make covers for the 08 sd's?

You could measure the air inlet opening and give outerwares a call. If they don't have it on hand, they will custome make you a pre filter in any color you choose. I would recommend asking for the water repellant option. I never noticed any flow problems using there products.
Aircraft icing is a different animal, what ford should do is see how every other vehicle on the road doesn't have this issue and kept it simple or maybe discovered the issue on their million mile all environment test ! IMHO Z
This ford grill cover sucks. It causes the ext temp controlon my heater to raise up mine has reach as high as 126 degrees. This causes the a/c to turn . Not what you want when its -10 out .
Ford says you have to turn off the heaters auto switch and use the heater on manual . This works until you reach your desired temp then the heater turns off. Going back to ford with this stupid cover.Plus the cover is a pain in the ass to install and tack off

The heat goes out in the manual mode as well. I don't like the auto mode on the temp control and have never used it but when I put the cover on it makes it tough to generate any heat for the defroster and such when plowing.
