No more Cleaning Exaust Filter messages? What's up?

Two weeks ago I was having trouble with hesitation and white smoke like a couple others on this board. As of 2 weeks ago I had all the most recent flashes according to the dealer. When the truck went into Regen mode it would tell me on the dash. The message would say "Cleaning Exhaust Filter" until it was complete. (anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes usually)
Now the dealer replaced the CAC and according to the work order "Checked" for updated computer flashes. This was part of a TSB to fix the white smoke and hesitation. So far no more white smoke or hesitation but my Dash message only flashes now. The "Cleaning Exhaust Filter" message will flash for just a couple seconds. Is there a more recent flash that they took this feature back out?

I tried taking it back to the dealer yesterday and they swear it's up to date.

Are we going backwards with the new flashes?

Funny, mine is the opposite:

I'm at *least* two flash releases behind the latest TSBs and mine only displays the cleaning exhaust filter message for a few seconds before disappearing again (the original flash I had would also regen in park but I'm now one release past that). I have to do the setup->reset self test to confirm that it is still doing a regen (though the turbo boost and exhaust note also give it away if I pay attention).

I've only had the cleaning exhaust filter message stay on twice in the entire time I've owned the truck (remember, I'm at least two releases behind). The first was after the drive to clean exhaust message (which I've only seen once) and the second was for no obvious reason.

In any event you will need the actual release number of the software they installed to really know if it is up to date or not. I vaguely remember that dealers can use a quarterly CD-ROM type of thing for the software or download the latest software available from Oasis so that might explain it.

Cresentbar-

I too had service done about 3 weeks ago.

Before the service, my cleaning message would stay on during the entire regen process.

According to the work order, they re-flashed to the latest version. Now I get just a 3 second cleaning message. I have to go to system check to make sure cleaning is done before I shut down.

The truck runs so good right now, I would hate to have them mess with it again, although I did like when the cleaning message was illuminated during regen.

...which means they can flash down a software generation... Mine also goes away after a few seconds. I just watch my fuel mileage. During regen it will drop into the 7's...

Thanks Sameolething:

The dealer just looked at me like I was an idiot. Glad I'm not the only one this has happened to. Right now the truck is running great. Now that I think about it the flash before the Exhaust Cleaning had better mileage. Going on a 400 mile trip this weekend so hopefully I'll see some gains.

Thanks again for everyone's responses.

I went in last night because my regens have substantially increased. Now, they are about every 200 miles, wereas they used to be about every 500-700. The dealer plugged in and said I have the latest reflash, which was installed in early March 2009 when I bought it. I find that hard to believe. Mine says "CLEANING EXHAUST FILTER" for the entire cleaning operation.

Recently, mine regenerated for about 20 minutes on the way to work and ended it's cycle before I shut it down. Then, it went into regen when I restarted it later that afternoon to leave work, and continued it;'s regeneration again for about 20 minutes. That's about 40 minutes of regeneration. When I put the truck in park, it said "DRIVE TO CLEAN FILTER". After 40 minutes of total regen in 50 miles? Then I shut it down for about 1/2 hour, and when I restarted it later, the message never came on, and it never went into regen for the following 150 miles. What's up there?

You have other issuing going on here. Sounds like some sensors are bad to me.

My crazy regens

I have the latest flash. We are fulltime RV'ers and had been in Kentucky south of Louisville. September the 8th we pulled out at 07:30 AM heading south. After over 3 hours of up and down hills pulling our 15,000# 5th wheel trailer and having EGTs from 800-1250 we went into regen. Now they say there is a sensor that is supposed to determine that it needs to regen. I say it should never have gone into regen after running those temps for over 3 hours. It seems that Ford is lying to us and also to the dealers. This is the only thing I don't like about this truck, other than that, everything is great.

The senors don't sense temp. They sense back pressure. Regens increase the temps to around 13-1400 degrees, this is required to burn off the soot.

I rolled over and back over Stevens Pass (US Hwy 2) in Washington State over the weekend. (empty both ways) Hand calculated 18.3 mpg on the trip. This flash has to be an older program because after the flash with the messages my mileage dropped to 15mpg at the very best on this same route. My guess is they can go bass ackwards with these tunes.

Senix,
According to my Edge Evolution my EGTs never even get to 1300 when in regen. They fluctuate from 700-1250 or so throughout the regen. What I'm saying is that after pulling the trailer at these same temps for over 2 hours there is no way it should need to go into regen.

Exhaust Cleaning every 300 miles

My 2008 6.4L goes into Exhaust Cleaning mode every 300 miles. I am unloaded and not pulling a trailer. Seems like this is too often? I talked to the Ford Dealer and his comment was, "You wanted clean air!" If anyone has something a little more intelligent I would appreciate. thanks
