My 2008 6.4L goes into Exhaust Cleaning mode every 300 miles. I am unloaded and not pulling a trailer. Seems like this is too often? I talked to the Ford Dealer and his comment was, "You wanted clean air!" If anyone has something a little more intelligent I would appreciate. thanks
Mine goes into regen once per week or once per tank full.
Hey smokewagon, it souds like you have the same flash that I had done at about that same time. I went from regen every 1000 to 1500 miles (up to 95,000 miles on truck) after the recall for new flash, it would regen. up to 6 times a day. Now it has 123,000 miles on it and is out of warrenty with a blown engine. I complaned to the dealership from day one but Ford said there was nothing wrong.
My advice to anyone with a 6.4 is to get an extended warranty before you hit 100,000 miles.
Oh by the way, to have the dealership install a new engine is $17,100.
Yeah I said $17,100
Well, I had my truck in today at the Ford dealer for an oil change and was told that this indeed was the latest flash.
I guess what I don't understand is why they would write the "cleaning exhaust filter" message during regen feature out of an updated software program.
Do they need to rob Peter to pay Paul in these programs when they update??
My 09 was built in June 09 and it does display cleaning exhaust filter. I've only had it a month but it seems to regen (that I notice) about once maybe twice per tank of fuel.
Is there any chance your reset button is stuck in the "pressed" position?

Senix,
According to my Edge Evolution my EGTs never even get to 1300 when in regen. They fluctuate from 700-1250 or so throughout the regen. What I'm saying is that after pulling the trailer at these same temps for over 2 hours there is no way it should need to go into regen.
The problem is you are producing more soot than the temps can burn off. Mho is there is no such thing as passive regen. If you are building enough heat to burn of soot, you are producing more soot than it can burn off. Think about it, how many people regen less when pulling a trailer and you are running higher egt.

Here's a thought. For those that only see the message for 2-3 seconds, what do you normally have on the DIC? Do you have the odo up for do you keep it blank?
Mine only showed the message for a few seconds and I keep the DIC blank.
The display on mine is usually on mileage, before the reflash the message would show up and displace the mileage screen until the regen was complete. After the reflash the message only shows up for a couple of seconds but the mileage seems to be better but I only have 5500 miles on the truck as well.
I can think of no better reason for Ford turning off that message than dealers simply get too may inquiries as to why it regens so often and what it means.
I sure hope that the reflash did something more than that. Does anyone know what else the August/Sept Stategy Code FSOL30 did?
After living with this for 2 years it is clear - if you remember how much a pre-emission diesels smoked and when they smoked it gives you a good idea when regen will be needed. The more fuel that goes thru them and the faster it goes thru always was and still is the smoke maker. That now gets trapped as soot in the dpf. When sensors sense back pressure from accumulated soot it regens.
If you really did dig deep, Ford does have advisories that say anywhere from 100 to 500 miles but don't elaborate as to why, and most service folks seem to wingit in their responses. Experience has taught me quality of fuel, elevation, load, rear end ratio, and heavy footedness all enter into the equasion. Full trailer load for your rig and you will get 80-100 miles between rgens unless you have a heckof a tail wind. Empty on highway those 355 and 373rear ends will get 500 but 410 and 430 488 will be more like 200 to 300.
I agree that there is no such thing as a passive regen.
I liked the constant message because it told me very clearly "do not plan on having power available to pull into traffic or pass." Pulling a load this is a big advantage.
Sure would like to regen manually when I haven't regened for 150 miles and I am into my last 15 highway miles before hitting stop and go.
I can think of no better reason for Ford turning off that message than dealers simply get too may inquiries as to why it regens so often and what it means.
If that's the case it's pretty ironic as the letter Ford sent out about the regens said many customers wanted to know what was going on so that's why they made the change!

Interesting. Mine was flashed last March or April 2009 when I bought it. It's a Job 3, 2008, F-350, Crewcab. A couple of weeks ago, my dealer checked ny flash and said it was the most recent update. It has always given me a message the entire time it is in regen mode. Only once has it ever told me to "Drive to Clean Exhaust Filter", and I am sure it was a mistake as it had just done a 20 minute regen earlier that day. The standard "Cleaning Exhaust Filter" message will stay on als long as I do not hit RESET to reset my Trip B meter. Then the cleaning message goes away for about five minutes before reappearing if the filter is still cleaning. If the message has disappeared because I reset my trip, I can hit SETUP and it will check all the perameters (brakes, doors, air filter, etc...) and the last message will again be the "Cleaning Exhaust Filter", which will then stay on until the truck is done with regen, and then it goes back to the last screen I had on before regen.
Maybe on the new 2010's, a bikini-clad babe will parade around the 4.5" LCD screen while in regen, huh?

Mine showed 'Cleaning Exhaust Filter' for months and then about a week ago it stopped displaying it. I have the Edge Evolution which I use for gauges only and this is how I know when it goes into regen. I have never seen 'Drive to Clean Exhaust Filter'.

just had a reflash done 2 weeks ago. when the "flashing" cleaning e.f. started, i called the tech. he said ford originally had no message displayed for regen. then people got concerned about the way their trucks ran. so they made the message stay on until complete. then people were concerned about that. ford's solution, make it flash once or twice and then disappear. you have to chuckle at that. they want to keep the owners calm but they keep throwing us curve balls.
TSB 09-16-9 and it's for trucks built prior 08/2/2007.
