Guys, I need some help here preferrably from a diesel tech. My truck has had black sooty tailpipes from day one back in June of last year. I witnessed a couple of regens the first couple of months that I had it (they were the parked in the driveway kind) and I really don't think I've had one in the last 20 or 25 thousand miles! I had the flash back in July that was supposed to tell you when the truck was in regen, never saw one. I had the latest 08B07 done Thursday and made a 450 mile trip yesterday and never seen one. My truck will actually leave a trail of black smoke and I can clean the tailpipes out and 30 or 40 miles later they are filled with soot again. I have mentioned this to my service writer several times. The first time he said don't worry about it, it's a diesel, it's supposed to smoke. I mentioned it to him last Thursday and he said let's see if this new flash will fix it. The diesel tech that did my flash walked around and looked at the tailpipe while he was doing the flash last Thursday and said "wow! it does have a lot of soot"! After he done the flash, he asked if it would smoke by just punching it and I said yes it will. So he punched it and sure enough, a puff of black smoke. He said if there's no CEL or codes there was really nothing they could do. Oh, by the way it was his last day at the dealership, he had got a job at another dealer closer to were he lived.
My question is, is it possible that the DPF is cracked just enough to keep the back pressure at the point were the computer thinks it doesn't need to regen or what? I called another dealership last week about 30 miles farther down the road and mentioned the sooty tailpipes and the service writer there said "oh honey they all smoke, don't worry about it".

It sounds like the dpf is cracked, but I dont think I would do anything about it until just before the warranty expires. Consider yourself lucky... no regen = better fuel mileage. By the way what kind of mileage are you seeing being that its not regenning ?

0360. I'm averaging 13.5 to 14.5 here in the hills of southern WV. Averaged 16.8 on my trip to NC yesterday running 70-75 mph. I can get over 18 if I drive around 62-65 mph. Also 1 more important question, is the DPF covered under drivetrain or the 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty? I've got 31,000 miles on her now.

and what happens when the crack gets bigger, your mileage hits single digits mty on the hwy, and now you want something done? ahh, wait till you have 100 miles left on your warranty and then ford tells you to stuff it.
yea, right now everything is ok, but, you paid 50k for a truck that should have all defects replaced during the warranty period. right now these defects might not be causing any problems, but guess what, there is a problem, and the longer you ignore it and ford denies it, the more you will be screwed (i.e. out of pocket $$$) when YOU pay to have your dpf replaced because your truck is in constant regen or whatever else is wrong.........
ford research and developement on these dpfs and their failures is non-existent. all of us that shelled out 50k for these trucks will be screwed after the warranties expire and the dpfs puke..............
the problem needs to be dealt with now.............
and what about the quality radiators we purchased............?

Go ahead and get your bloodpressure up if you like. Been there done that with my six liter. I took my 6.0 in about five times for blowing excessive smoke when the egr would open, and they never could find anything. It turned out being a huge waste of my time, and related to the programming that ford used on the 03' six-0's. In the end, I would have just kept driving it. Just drive the thing, and enjoy it. When it stops running correctly beyond blowing smoke, take it in. Make sure you have a service reciept that documents that you asked them about the excessive smoke, and they couldnt find anything, and you have done your part. By the way, after my repair quote for the work on my six-o, there is no way I would own one of the emission beasts without having the esp 200k ford plan if you are planning on driving past 100k. It costs two arms and a leg to fix-em. It looks like the dpf would be covered by the 5/100k but you may want to make sure it doesnt end with the emissions 8/80k. Good luck!

hey, my SERVICE ADVISOR told me, "i wouldn't own a 6.0 if i won it in a poker game." good luck.
I have 23000k on my truck now and it's had a black tailpipe since 1200. I've taken it to two dealers and they both told me there was nothing they could do cause the truck was running normal..
