oil filter changes....any tricks here

Coming from a 7.3 PSD, I have no experience with the internal cartridge filters that come on the 6.0's and 6.4's. Any tricks to changing them....assume they drain down when engine has been off...so you don't have a big mess on top of the engine? Also..since you can't pre fill them like the old spin on filters...do you just start the engine up and not worry about how long it takes to fill the filter? Thanks.

Remember to loosen the filter cap first to allow the filter housing to drain back into the crankcase before removing the drain plug. As for filling filters before installing them, that is a bad practice.

Doc, why is pre-filling a spin on oil filter bad practice?

Does this relate only to diesel's or is gas engines the same?

Take some paper towels up into the engine compartment with you. No matter how carefully I try to flip the filter upside down, so any drips go in the cap while I'm taking it over to the drain pain, a drop or two always falls - wouldn't want that down in your nice new clean engine!

You might want to invest in a 36MM socket for the nut on top of the oil filter housing. It also fits the nut on the fuel filter.

Makes it a lot easier.

I too want to know more about this. I have always put a little oil in a spin on filter. Why is that a bad practice? Just here to learn! Thanks!!

I think he is talking about upside down filters (messy, messy), not standard spin on filters.

You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.
