Oil viscosity

When I was in the dealership today I was talking to them about oil viscosity. They told me they only use 10W 30 in the diesels. This is throughback from the 6.0 that ran poorly in cool weather on 40 wt.
They actually had not read the owners manual where it says that above 10 deg celcius or when towing you must use a 40 grade. They don't even have any 15W 40 in stock! Should ford not have put out a bulletin that the new engine runs fine on proper diesel oil?
For now I will just change my own oil, but I find this a bit disturbing. Is this cause the engine is really new and their guys haven't gone on courses for the new engine yet?

Re: Oil viscosity

The engine is so new most of the Ford mechanics even if they have been to school are still less familiar with the engine than 08 owners on this site. Realize that even if you sit in any classroom and learn something that hands on is what really makes learning stick. Let's hope that alot of these mechanics never get tons of hands on 6.4L. Besides honest truth is alot of them are still swamped with 6.0L, at least that is what I see at my local ford service department. I'm not being evil to the 6.0L owners on this site because there are truly many good running ones out there, but there are truly enough bad ones to keep the ford mechanics busy also.

Re: Oil viscosity

Here is Fords maintenance video (which I understand is included on a CD with all sales). 6.4 Maintenance Video

Click on "Lubrication System" on the main menu.

If your dealership tech can't service your 6.4 according to this bible, tell the service manager that you're going elseware until they get up to speed. A knowledgeable 6.4 owner will be the best incentive for the dealership techs to be doing things correctly until the learning curve has been completed.
