I am wondering about fuel economy of the 6.4 vs. the 6.0 and 7.3 engines. I did a search and found a lot of stuff about fuel economy specifically on the 6.4, and some of the posts had stuff like "my 6.0 got better mileage", but I'd like to see some figures from people who have driven both and see how much worse the 6.4 is. If you can provide figures I'd appreciate it, also axle ratios and whether mileage is towing/empty, manual/auto, usual speed, etc. I am told that a 7.3 will pull what I want to tow without problem (possibly up to 47ft trailer, 2 cars for track, maybe 15-18k lbs), but most of them out there are high mileage and pretty pricey still compared to a used '08, which I don't understand. Also, from what I can gather I should avoid the 6.0...is this true? So far everyone I have talked to except for one person has said stay away from them. Please understand I am NOT trying to start any heated discussion, just want to get as much info as possible. Thanks!

You need to search further. There are several economy related posts here in the 6.4 section where figures ARE posted. Many, Many in the 6.0 forum.
One thing you will need to do is look closely at what's being compared. Maybe you should start a specific topic for each model: F-250, F-350, F-450& up. Then they need to post what body style, trans & gearing, and a bunch of other stuff.
Its difficult to get a feel for economy by just saying "My 6.4..." vs "My 6.0 or 7.3" as EVERYTHING effects economy. Tire size & pressure, environment, lift, terrain, gears, mods, traffic, body style & length, cap, tailgate, etc. There are too many variables to just compare engine displacement.

I drove about 300 miles from from Wichita Falls to Midland yesterday, cruising at 74 MPH in the car. On I-20 west of Abilene a 2008 F-350 SRW PSD dragging a tall/long/heavy fifth-wheel RV passed me. He was doing about 82. I followed him for a few miles, allowing him to be the rabbit to flush out any Smokies. I'll guarantee he was getting a lot less than 10 MPG. Not because his tow vehicle was a 6.4L diesel, but because he was begging for extremely poor fuel mileage by going that fast dragging a wind-grabbing tall-profile trailer.
So when folks complain about poor fuel mileage, I'll think of that guy. Sure, mine will get lousy mileage too if I drag a tall-profile 5er at over 80 MPH into a headwind!

Towing at 80 mph plus, I think an excellent following distance would be in order, to avoid the flying rubber, and the carnage, if anything went wrong. The more I think about this, the better it gets. I wonder what the diff, tranny, pyro temps were running. I did a quick burst of 100 mph with a 38 foot fifth wheel trailer once showing off. My buddy with the big truck was impressed, and I was stupid.

I can agree to the way you drive it depends on fuel mileage. A buddy of mine drives a new 08 F-550 crew cab 2x4 auto 4.88 gears with a 9 foot dump on it. He drives like he stole it always accelerating hard from every stop light and going no less then 70mph on the highway. He gets around 4-6 Mpg out of it and has to fill up every morning or it will run out of fuel. Good thing he works for a landscape company and it isn't his truck or fuel bill. I know if I drive it I could easily do better than that but I would drive different also.
Here is my info. The two trucks are 99% the same. My '08 is a longbed, and my '03 was a shortbed, with only very minor differences. the shipping weight on the '03 was 6036 pounds and 7182 on the '08.
Truck details are below. In the winter I averaged the same as the summer, so long as it was a long trip on the highway. Around 16.5 to 17 mpg. It now has over 20,400 on the odometer. I drive like a mature man, not some kid in his dad's truck. Towing 8,000 lbs total a 7 x 16 v-nose tag, I get 11 mpg with regular winds, as MN is almost always windy. With a tail wind, could get close to 12 or so I am sure. Like others have said, if you are looking at fuel costs when looking at a new SD, look at another truck. If you want a quiet ride, lots of power, and a girl getter, keep an open AMEX on you for the fuel stops. If you take any input, get a long bed not only for the bed space, but the larger tank (38 gal.).
Good luck and stay safe over there. I did 30 months in the Middle East, but not in Iraq. Forget what CNN says, we are supporting you 150%.

Oops! Thanks for your support...I need to change my thing, though, I got back a couple months ago. Yeah, we laughed at the news while we were over there, because you almost wouldn't believe we were in Iraq it was so different from the TV.
One of our subcontractors has an 08 550 automatic 4x4 that weighs around 10K Here is what he is getting driving the truck below about 40% town and 60% highway no faster than 65-70 mph....................

I have an 08 F450 6.4, 4x4, 4.30 gears, chassis cab with a 12' dump bed on it. I get about 10-10.6 mpg with about half city and half highway. It has a tare weight of 11,090 #'s and I can put 4 ton in the bed and get the same mileage. I drive reasonable to get the better mileage.
mjstef, I would bet a cold one that your friend's 550 weighs quite a bit more than 10,000lbs as equipped as the photo indicates. My 2008 F-450 tips the scales at 9,000lbs with a full tank of fuel and me aboard with nothing in the bed. I would guessestimate it weighs closer to 12-13,000lbs.

Right, but what I'm trying to do is get figures from people who have owned both the earlier versions and the new one- I figure their driving habits will stay roughly the same so would provide a decent indicator of whether the 6.4 is actually that much worse for fuel economy than the previous trucks.

I just got back from 1000 mile rountrip through the mountains from Denver to lake powell Utah. I averaged 13.8MPG pulling my boat at 70-75MPH. The lie-o-meter said 13.8. My 6.0 on the same trip with the same boat got just about the same but the lie-o-meter always read around 16MPG. My 7.3 would average about 15MPG with the same boat.
The mileage I get towing is almost identical to my other version PSD's. The place where I notice less MPG with the 6.4 is around town and empty on the highway where I'm about 1-2MPG less.

Just one 200# saw on the bed and a generator plus a few hand tools in the bins. The bad thing is the other truck he drives is an F650 with a 3126B Cat in it with an auto trans and it will get 12 mpg grossing 24,000#
