6.4L Power Stroke Engine and DrivetrainDiscussion of the 6.4L Power Stroke diesel engine and drivetrain in the 2008 Super-Duty trucks. No gas engine discussion allowed except on transmissions and drivetrain that pertain to all models. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 6.4L Power Stroke engine.
I had noticed the truck always seemed to start quickly and consistently... here is how it actually works:
(from this document )
Background
The 2007 F53 motor home stripped chassis and the 2008 F-SuperDuty models have a new engine starting strategy programmed into the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Description
One-Touch Integrated Start (OTIS):
The subject vehicles have One-Touch Integrated Start (OTIS), a computer-assisted cranking
system. This feature assists in starting the engine. If the ignition key is turned to the START
position and released when the engine begins cranking, the engine may continue cranking for up
to 10 seconds or until the vehicle starts.
Once the ignition is turned to the START position, the PCM reads starter motor request (SMR)
from the ignition switch and gains control of the starter engagement. The customer is no longer in
the loop after the initial crank request, the customer may release the key to the RUN/START
position. The PCM will disengage the starter motor based on the following events:
• The engine is started (rpm threshold)
• A set time has been exceeded
• The ignition key has been turned to the OFF position
The applicable Ford Shop Manual and the Owner's Guide contain detailed OTIS information.

I have some friends that just bought an '07 1/2 ton dodge with the little v8 (4.7). It has that "feature" too. I personally think it's dumb-if you can't manage to operate a starter you probably should not be driving in the first place. Seems like a way to drive the price of a new vehicle up even more.

Actually it's just technology, kinda like Fuel injection, piezo injectors, halogen lights. I have it on my 97 bimmer, so it isnt new by any stretch.

Sure it's technology-no one would deny that. The examples you listed of technology serve at least some notable purpose. Saving one from the daunting task of operating an ignition key seems to fall into the "technology" category but not the "notable purpose" category. I'm not crying for the days when a car might not start on a cold morning and an automatic transmission was something only the rich had, but this is getting ridiculous. You can bet the cost to develop it was passed on to everyone who buys the vehicle, including those not stumped or unduly strained by ignition key operation.
It's a solution in search of a problem.

I push a blue button on my FOB while I'm rinsing out my cereal bowl in the morning and 30 seconds later when I go out in the driveway the truck is running, the defrost is on when its cold outside and the air is running when its hot outside.
Make that factory standard.
