I think most of us are getting decent fuel mileage compared to some. Check out this truck that some poor guy had. Click on the link and scroll down to the dash photo.
I usually make my MPG readout, read low before I pickup my brother in-law, by resetting just when I get in his driveway, he always looks and it’s a great mine game. I also see that the hoses to the degas bottle are on the wrong ports, it has an old version EGR valve and no tee? I wonder if that is considered the engine is running properly. I hope the buyer reads this forum first.

Nope just a very light throttle and rolling on to and off the throttle. When accelerating keep the boost under 10psi and when it regens make sure it goes to completion before you stop. I do all of this and see regularly 13-15 in the city and 19-21 on the highway. The mileage is better just after regen and will get worse as you get closer to regen. I get about the same mileage as our 6.0 so i am happy. Although, ever time it regens i can watch the gas gauge drop half of a quarter tank in that 20min. As has been said, good milage is a state of mind that is directly correlated to your right foot.
Could have been they reset the mpg readout and didn't drive it around enough before taking the pics. Like Pagosa Rob said, they could have been idling too. I would have gone to better lengths to make that readout read higher if I had any interest in selling that truck.
As far as mileage on ours, it's completely stock F350 LWB CC SRW 4x4 with 3.73s and stock 20's and gets 17+ on the highway, and at worst 14 in town. On the last regen it had it only dropped .5 mpg, and that was me running WOT to finish it faster.
I would do cartwheels if I got 14 in the city. I hand calculate every tank and average 9.5mpg in the city. Hwy mileage isn't bad 17mpg or so. I just do alot more city driving so if I got 40mpg on the hwy it wouldn't matter.

thanks for the reply but your kind of loosing me with the regen thing can you elaborate a liitle bit thanks for the help.
You've got an 05. Those of us with 08s or newer have additional exhaust cleaning requirements added to our truck. One is a diesel particulate filter or dpf. When it becomes clogged with soot, the exhaust gas temp is raised to extreme levels to burn (and also known as a "regen") the soot off the dpf. That dpf also creates a significant amount of back pressure in the exhaust system. It all adds up to poorer fuel mileage than the 7.3L or 6.0L engines.
I had an 01 F250 and got similar mileage to yours.

I have 37" tires and stock 3.73 gearing. I still consistantly pull off around 13mpg around town and about 17 on the highway. Meanwhile, it has more than enough power to proudly pull my fully loaded toyhauler up any mountain.
I think I could likely improve on the fuel mileage by changing the gears to 4.30s, but I find it reasonable as is. This is surely the best truck I've ever owned. Rides great too!

I missed that part of his post. The main reason for your mileage is how fast you drive. In our 05, we can pull 20s but that is at 64 mph, nothing in the truck and no cruise control, once you move above 2000rpms then the mileage will drop quite fast. At 70-75 mph we get something in the upper teens, certainty not 20mpg. If mileage is a major concern for you try different brands of fuel. Diesel with a higher cetane will give better mileage. The dpf comments only apply to 08 and newer.
Hey thanks to all you guys for the input on your fuel mileage especialy davydee on clearing up the regin thing i guess im right in the ball park then comparing to you guys.Im just recently signed up on this site ,but have reading it for quite awhile figured I would join in so thanks to all and i will be following along in future i will try to get some picts. posted
