Re: The Post I Had Hoped To Never Have To Make

[ QUOTE ]
A "crossover tube"? First thing that popped into my mind was, "wonder if there is a crossover tube connecting one EGR cooler to the other EGR cooler? Might explain the time necessary to cannibilize the part and replace the bad part on your truck.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ding Ding Ding, I think we have a winner.

When I got to the dealership I asked about the part. They were "too busy" to show me the parts and such, but he said it was the EGR cooler coolant line that split. He could not give me the old one as it has to go back to Ford so they can figure out why it happened.

They had the truck ready about 3:30 this afternoon and he actually called me! I was however not happy when I showed up and they had not washed it. It still had the white haze from the coolant all over the drivers side. I asked about it and they said there was no openings in the wash bay. I expressed my displeasure and I think he was afraid I would give him a bad rating on the survey. He told me to give him back the truck and give him 20 minutes and he would have it taken care of. I sent my wife to return the rental car (about 3 miles away.) I waited almost an hour and my truck had not returned. I went and found the service writer. He called the wash area and they had not even started it. I was getting really annoyed, but kept my cool. I explained that my wife and 7 month old son were now waiting for me at a rental place that closed at 5pm (which it was 5 at that time) and they would be waiting outside in the heat.

He told the wash people to get it done asap. (A supervisor was also supposed to have gone back at that time to push them.)

I called my mom to go and get my wife and son so they would not be waiting outside. The manager lady at Budget Rental stayed late so they would not have to wait outside.

It was still almost 45 minutes later before they brought my truck around.

When I asked them to wash it, I explained that I did not want it detailed, just washed. The service writer asked about the inside and such and I told him not to worry about it. I just wanted to be sure there was no paint damage.

So a quick (and VERY crappy) wash took 45 minutes? (An hour and 45 minutes total.)

Overall, I am happy the truck is back in my possession, but I am not totally happy with the experience. The service writer was very straight forward on the phone about giving him a good review on the survey, but I am not sure I can do so. Even when I expressed my concern in person he did not really want to do anything to make me a happy customer. It was like I really had to demand to have things done.

I asked about talking to the customer relations person, but was told she was not available, so I will contact her in the next couple of days.

BTW: The oil change was only $65. I was told it was around $125 to have a dealer change a diesel.

that is not Ford's fault.

[/ QUOTE ]

Of course it is. They aquired, installed, and sold the defective part to the customer. Yes, things can happen. In this case, Ford let it. If I were selling a product containing a conglomeration of vender parts, I would certainly check and QC those parts prior to installing and selling them. The failure should not of happened.

[/ QUOTE ]

Gentelmen, gentlemen:

where is the evidence the part is defective?
It could have been:
1) damaged when it was installed.
2) subjected to overpressure, overtemperature, or other conditions exceeding the specification of the hose.
3) it could have been incorrectly installed(proper tightness, no twisting of hose, etc)
4) damage by rats, etc that may have lived in the engine compartment
5) the list could go on and one.

In any case, proper diagnosis of the hose failure could not be made by examination of the hose alone.

khitch710, it's amazing how many transplanted Western New Yorkers we meet in our travels. Tania and I lived on Transit Road in East Amherst for three years between 1989 and 1992 before moving to Wilmington, Delaware.

We were just in Niagara Falls last week enjoying all that good food and dropping a few shickles at the Casino's crap tables.

They have not paid for it yet, but they will.

What happened was the truck broke down in the late afternoon on Saturday. The dealership was already closed for the weekend. The only open rental places I could find were at the airport. I rented from Budget because there was no line when we got there. (I did not know at the time that Enterprise was on site at SG.) After my truck was picked up by the tow company, I called the road side service number back and asked about a rental car. She put me on hold to find out and came back and said to just rent a car and submit the bill for reimbursement.

I intend to submit the rental car as well as my bill for the extra nights of lodging. (They better be glad I had my own home with me. A hotel would have been a lot more.)

I will get a hold of Devine and see what she can do to help me. Thank you again Kevin for everything!

Wouldn't it be in the fact it failed at 2K miles? Or are you saying we can expect this type of failure to be normal?

Gotta go...I need to make sure rats aren't living in my engine compartment and eating my crossover tubes.

Re: The Post I Had Hoped To Never Have To Make

You are a brave soul letting the dealership wash your new truck. Call me paranoid, but I am the only person to wash our cars and truck(and both rv's and the boat). I especially never use the auto washers, no matter the outside weather. Glad to hear you are back on the road, at least like you said you had your home with you and family nearby. I will be towing our big rv out to Teton's factory this summer and due to wife starting new career, it looks like just me and our 5 year old Daughter will be making the trip(now glad the wife talked me into the rear DVD option). Hopefully I will not experience what you have gone through. Ain't it funny how hard we are pressured to sign off that everything went hunky dory at the dealership? I told the truth about one Ford dealership and the service manager called personally and was a bit rude because I put down I was not at all satisfied with the job. PS, if you need a Ford dealer in MD, stay far away from Waldorf, MD.

Like you said, that is not Ford's fault. Ford does not manufacture coolant hoses.

[/ QUOTE ]

Sorry, but those hoses are made to a Ford engineering spec and subject to Ford's mandatory QS9000 / ISO quality procedures and approvals. With the materials and production technology available today there is NO reason for a hose on a new vehicle to fail.

Not enough people realize that Ford and GM squeeze every red cent out of their suppliers - the hose manufacturer probably had to cut costs to the bone in order to stay out of Bankruptcy due to Ford's price pressure. [Now do you realize why International stopped shipping?]

Also not enough people realize how many of the components on 'American made' vehicles come from China and India, etc. Ford selects their suppliers and specs the parts - Ford IS ultimately responsible for that hose. If they had their own cost structure under control [outrageous pay and benefits, etc.] then they could afford to pay for quality components. And before you flame me understand that I have worked in major automotive suppliers now for 14 years.

$50K - $60 K trucks with weak hoses? Inexcusible and it IS Ford's problem.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is comical, at what point of a spec does it say to make the hose defective, ISO standards are written proceedures not product related specs."NO" reason for a hose to fail??? come on!!

Re: The Post I Had Hoped To Never Have To Make

Gshelton, I hate to ask such a newbie question, but I have never broken down while towing a trailer. If you had broken down towing your 5th wheel, who would you have called to tow that off the highway? Guess this is off topic. Just really curious cause it could happen to me too.

That is not a newbie question. It is a very valid question.

Had I broke down with the trailer, I would have called Good Sam's Emergency Road Side Service as they will deal with the trailer.

Without that, I would have likely had to disconnect from the trailer so Ford RSS could pick up the truck and then call someone to haul the trailer for me. (Which I would have then submitted the bill to Ford.)

IS there any chance you got a copy of the warranty paperwork? If so could you please post the part # replaced? I will get the parts book illustration and post it the illustration for all to see. Curious to see...

Re: The Post I Had Hoped To Never Have To Make

Good to know. Like William, I would have had to scramble and call a buddy. Makes sense that there would be a towing service for 5vers or RVs. Thx.

I broke down last week and had to call Ford Road Side Service. I had a 7000 pound goosneck on behind my F450. I was told by Ford Road Side Service that they would cover the first $200.00 dollars on the trailer. It was not an issue as the tow truck driver towed the F450 with the goosneck attached. I'm not sure what maximum coverage is on the truck.
