Premium Maintenance Plan

I'm looking for some opinions. I recently purchased a '09 F350, financially I am buried in this rig so I probably won't be trading as frequently as I have in the past.

I have never purchased any service plans or warranties before as I have never kept a vehicle long enough for it to matter, or in the case of my lightning I modded it out of the box and voided the powertrain warranty.

I do not plan on modding the new diesel, it will be used as is for light duty towing and daily commuting to work and back.

I have been offered the Premium Maintenance Plan 6year/100K service at the 10,000 mile interval (10 visits) for 1295$ + tax. Is this a fair price? They will do the 5,000 interval plan for 2530$.

How do most of you feel about these plans. I'd appreciate some feedback about what your experience has been using these. I hate paying for something up front however If I can save some money I may do it. Has anyone put together any real data about what the value of the service plan saves you in the long run versus paying as you go?

Thanks for any help

I bought it

I bought the 6 yr/100K Premium Maintenance plan and the Premium 7 yr/100K ESP for my 09 F350 6.4 CC LB 4x4 for reasons similar to yours.

I wanted to protect my investment and I planned to make sure all the maintenance work was done and documented to assure:
A. that the truck was well cared, and
B. that my warranties (standard and extended) were guaranteed to cover whatever went wrong.

Part of my reasoning was that while my truck (built Feb 2009) might have escaped some of the early problems (radiator, etc.) that early buyers of the 6.4 experienced, the emissions technology seemed still fairly new and potentially prone to problems and the problems, if they occurred, were expensive (and potentially catastrophically expensive.) I didn't want to face something like that at mile 36,001 or on day one of month 37.

I also didn't want to have any questions about whether the required maintenance had been done if something went wrong with the truck. If something goes wrong I expect to be able to take it to a Ford dealer and essentially say "It's your problem, fix it."

If I'd had to pick one or the other I'd pick the ESP to ensure the truck was warranted for a longer period because they are so complicated and expensive to fix when something goes wrong. After reading what other owners have paid for various problems they've encountered it seemed like cheap insurance.

In my case I wanted the Premium Maintenance plan because I am not set up to perform the maintenance myself and I want to be sure it is done and documented. And, after reading what the going rates were for oil changes, fuel filters, and other required maintenance work (and considering what I'd paid the dealer for work on my other truck) and comparing those to the work required to assure the warranties were protected, the Premium maintenance plan seemed like a cheaper way to go.

I did a tremendous amount of research - getting quotes from more than 30 different dealers around the country (and Ford corporate) before buying my plans. I ultimately bought both plans from Troy Dietrich (FD-Warranty.com/Ford of Greeenfield, MA) because he was direct, honest, easy to deal with and would meet the best quote I got. But I got good quotes from two other sources. (see this thread for info on my experience: Report on New 09 F350 6.4 Mileage, Regen, etc..

My Premium Maintenance plan was $2230, so while your dealer's quote is not too bad you can get it cheaper - either by buying elsewhere or negotiating with the dealer. If your dealer is good to work with they should be able to meet the price I paid. They are still making a profit and they have complete freedom to negotiate the price.

For me, the Premium ESP and maintenance plans were a good deal. I'll probably pay substantially less than I would otherwise pay for required maintenance work and I'll have documentation that guarantees there won't be any argument about whether the maintenance work was done if I need to have warranty work done. If I have a need for significant warranty work after the standard warranty period the ESP will probably be paid for with the first significant problem. Cheap insurance - and basically the ESP IS insurance.

It means I'll have to keep the truck stock but that's not a problem for me.

I also plan to keep the truck for the long haul but the warranties and maintenance plans are transferrable if I decide to sell the truck and I figure they'd be good selling points to assure someone the truck was well cared for and they could protect their investment.

Thanks for the quick response. I just got off the phone with Troy and his price was the best so far. I will probably purchase from him in the near future.

I'm not sure whether to go with the 5K or 10K interval. The service manual seems to indicate that the 10K interval is sufficient for the type of driving I do. The truck is used primarily as a car with the exception of a few weekend trips with a travel trailer here and there.

Regarding the ESP.. I figure that most of the bugs will show up while within the 3/36 warranty if they are going to fail. The motor is still covered under the 5/100k warranty for the diesel engine provided the maintenance has been performed and documented.. correct?

On the ESP question, look closely on what is actually covered under the various options. There are three coverage levels to the ESP you can select and the extended diesel engine base warranty doesn't cover the same as the 3/36 B-B warranty.

Personally, I went with the 7yr/100K premium ESP for my truck. No maintenance plan since I do all routine maintenance on all my vehicles myself.

I expect you are right that most of the bugs will show up within the 3/36 warranty period, though from reading on this and various other forums it is clear from the experience of others that not all necessarily will (some have had radiator replacements, etc. soon after the 3/36 period) and that those that don't might be costly enough to justify the extended ESP. You are also right that the 5/100 warranty on the diesel engine is applicable so long as the maintenance is performed and documented. So that may be the best way for you to go.

wp6529 is also right that the Premium ESP covers more than the diesel engine so worth considering and looking at the various options.

It's all a calculated gamble and each of us has different circumstances that might drive us one way or another. I opted for peace of mind and simplicity and the up front money was not a determinative factor for me. Plus, some of the extras on my truck are expensive to fix and I wanted as near bumper to bumper coverage as I could get. Your calculations will obviously be different. If bumper to bumper (or an approximation thereof) is not that important to you the ESPs may not be that important. It was to me.

Glad to hear your experience with Troy was similar to mine and that you will get a better price from him than your dealer, unless you can get the dealer to negotiate.

Good luck with your truck.
