Has anyone had any experience with something like this? I wonder if it puts off that weird smell.... the "hot dust" smell. I am trying to decide if I should spend the money to get it or not.

From what I can tell, it is like the aux heater in a home. When the heat is turned on in your house, it uses the heat pump to generate the heat (in the exact opposite way it creates the cold for the A/C.) When you need a lot of heat quickly, it turns on electric heating coils. They are very power hungry, so it is only used as an "emergency" heat.
Of course, in the truck, it uses your coolant. Free heat. But the supp heater looks to be an electric heating coil. Hence the need for the larger alt. also.
I live in Florida where it is cold 2 days a year, but I am opting for it as it will heat the cab quickly while waiting for the engine to warm up.
Hope this helps.
