Rearend humming???

I own an F-450 w/ 4.88 gears, and at certain speeds I can hear a humming noise on the rearend. If I throttle it up a little ,it goes away then let go @ about 30-40 mph you can hear it hum. The truck has 27K miles on it now so I think I better take it in for inspection. Any one with similar problem??

Re: Rearend humming???

I have an F-450 4x4 w/4.30 axle and the maximum traction rear tires. I have noticed more tire noise at certain speeds but no rear end noise. If you're hearing a change in noise at different throttle settings it could be the ring gear. Try putting it in neutral when you hear the noise. If you still hear it then it's probably the tires.

Re: Rearend humming???

My 08 F-250 4x4 CC w/3.73 axle with 4200 miles has low frequency humming/light vibration that started a week ago. Something in my drive line begins humming when I get right past 50 mph and goes away once I get to 60mph. I can take my foot off the accelerator when it starts and the noise will stop but will resume as soon as I put my foot back in it. I haven't had a chance to take it in but this along with the 2 injectors I've already had changed plus the rattle in the dash that sounds like a mouse has got me regretting I bought this thing and that fuel economy and regens only add to my frustrations. I'll ask about the rear end when I drop it off, Thanks

Re: Rearend humming???

I seem to remember a few TSB's about driveshafts on 08's with dana axles (80 & S110) and moan/drone/whine condition @ 1500-2000rpm and/or 50-60mph.
Was only for the DRW's though.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

You are correct about the TSB's. Here is the one that may apply in this case...

TSB 07-16-3 AXLE WHINE NOISE - 50-60 MPH (80-97 KM/H) - WIDE FRAME WITH PICKUP BOX - DANA S110

FORD: 2008 F-450

ISSUE:
Some 2008 F-Super Duty F-450 wide frame vehicles equipped with a pickup box and the Dana S110 axle may exhibit an axle whine noise between 50-60 MPH (80-97 Km/h). Most noticeable at 58 MPH (93 Km/h) under load during a floating condition with a tip out then tip in on acceleration.

ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Replace the driveshaft with revised service part per application.

WARRANTY STATUS:
Eligible Under Provisions Of New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage
IMPORTANT: Warranty coverage limits/policies are not altered by a TSB. Warranty coverage limits are determined by the identified causal part.

Re: Rearend humming???

My Dad's new F-450 did the same thing and the dealership ended up replacing the Rear End. That was about 15K miles ago and so far so good.

I have the whine in a 08 450 with 4.88's. First time to the dealer, they said it was a new truck and they did not have the tools to inspect it.

While I was checking around to find out if there was any truth in that, they called to say there was a TSB for the driveshaft and to bring it in. Driveshaft was replaced and the whine is still there.

Took it in today for an unknown leak coming from the area of the left side headlight (light oil) and the service advisor said she will call in a few days. I said yeah righ, you mean hours?
"No these new trucks take time to figure out sometimes, and we have a few ahead of you."
Until the 08's this dealer has not sold many, if any 450/550 so they may truly not have the tools for the larger rearends in these truck, but they should. I will see what they say later today, adn then probably will have to go to a dealer who knows the heavier trucks.

Find a commercial Ford truck dealer. That is what I use, they have the equipment, experienced diesel techs to handle our larger trucks.

I will see what they say this time and go from there. I talked to a commercial dealer this morning and he made it clear that it was no big deal to open up the diff and inspect them. I will take it there if I get anymore inflated stories.

I got the call that my oily leak is the radiator, my chirping while cold is a pulley and they still need tools for my rear end. Parts on order and I will be getting a loaner vehicle. Sure hope it can tow.
This truck has been real nice, and despite these little issues, I am still a Ford man. I could care less about mileage, but I want my truck back.
Is it true that my coolant is 60,000 mile rated and light gold in color? I thought this was a hydraulic leak and they tell me it is the radiator.
The chirping could very well be a pulley, and i do not dispute that one, but the tool issues does have me a little miffed.
In a nice way, I tried to tell the service lady that this is the Dana s110 and has been used in other years, so why do they not have the tools, and she assured me that despite the above, the new trucks have newer rear ends and are different.
Not being one to rattle the cage of the person with my vehicle, I made her think I believed that, but have serious doubt going on.

My 550 did the same thing. Ford replaced the rear end. Not the whole thing, just the inner parts. It was out of tolerance. They had to redo it a few times before they gave it back to me. No more noise. It is very quiet. BTW,I had 14,000 lbs. on it today. No problem. Just leave some braking distance.......
