Red Line Limit?

My F450 RPM guage does not have a reline like my Duramax. With the Dmax I believe my top RPM before the redline was about 3300---whats the story with the Ford?

I don't know precisely what the red line is but I do know that the F-450 is speed limited to 80-85 mph, so whatever rpm that is is the max the PCM will allow. As far as ungoverned redline, I don't know. They probably do not have a redline since the PCM will not allow you to "redline" it so what's the need.

Re: Red Line Limit?

4000 MAX (Red Line), 3700 RPM Max Governed Speed (Page 6 of the Diesel Supplment book.) You can over rev one by downshifting at to high a ground speed or gearing down on a downhill run using the engine for braking.

Re: Red Line Limit?

I didn't think you could over rev an automatic by downshifting as it won't downshift until it is slowed nough not to over rev. Not sure if we were talking manuals or automatics.

Re: Red Line Limit?

The computer won't let the automatic downshift if it will overrev the engine. You can put the shifter in 1 at any speed, but it won't shift to 1 until it reaches a speed that it can make the shift without damaging anything.

Re: Red Line Limit?

I assume you are talking manual tranny here. You CAN over rev the engine, but in my experience, you would have to be an idiot. If you accidentally attempt to grab the wrong gear, you will find that it will be very hard to force it into the undesired gear. Both manuals I have had have been great- very smooth shifting. If it fights you at all, you need to re-think your gear selection.
