Good morning everyone. Well i traded in my highly modified Cummins and came back over to the Powerstroke club with absolutely no regrets, but I do have some questions regarding this regen stuff. As of today I have 675 miles on my truck and I have had 6 regen cycles which last between 20 and 25 minutes; all the reading that i have been doing pre and post purchase tells me that this is not right but when I talk to my dealer they say that it is ok, what do you think? Also when I was working back in the pasture my truck was just ideling there at about 1400 rpm during a regen cycle and I smelled something burning, I went around to the other side of the truck and a bush maybe 8" away was smoking from the heat of the exhaust, is this normal as well. Last question, when the truck goes into regen does it take power away from it, because it seems to become sluggish until it finishes and then it is back to it's peppy self. Sorry for the long and drawn out question but I just want to get my facts straight before I talk to my dealer again. Thanks, Mike

You may be getting more regen cycles because of fuel quality and or driving habits. When the truck goes into regen the motor is detuned to 325hp and will have different quality to the sound of the motor and exhaust. The exhaust temp will be very high during a regen which is normal. The regen process elevates the exhaust temp to a very high level to burn off the stored soot in the DPF.

I've only witnessed 1 regen and I have a little over 11,000 miles on mine. My son has an 08 6.4 company truck that he uses in the mountains 99% of the time and he says it regens every day and sometimes twice in 1 day. He drives it very slow in 4LO and hardly ever shuts if off (idles most of the day). Another note, his tailpipes are very clean, like they are not even hooked up to the exhaust system. My pipes are black and it does smoke a little.

Hey guys, I guess I may have a problem with my 6.4L then. Every morning my truck regens. Is this bad??? Also, it felt like I had power loss or a miss this afternoon going about 35. Got back home and the truck regened again for about 30 minuts. Any help?????
m1tanker, where are you? If the outside air temp is below 40 degrees F (I think) the truck will go into a high idel. Maybe that's what it's doing and not regen.

I live in Cincinnati, OH. The thing does it all the time.... It scared me this afternoon when it it did it for 30 minuts. This is my first Desel, so I'm new to this stuff.
m1tanker, new to diesel or not, most of us are new to regens.
in the morning that is the truck doing a high idle to aid in the warming it up.

i agree, when it's first cranked in the morning the truck will high idle much like a re-gen only not blazing hot out of the pipes. it's probably just warming up. are your pipes black?

I have a question on this regen stuff. I am looking at buying a new truck but I live only 1 mile from work so my time driving is very short. I go home to eat lunch so I have 4 trips of 5 minutes a day. May be once a month I will run the truck for more than 30 minutes straight. How will this kind of driving effect the the regening?

Have you considered getting a bicycle instead?
1640, your type of commuting would be bad for any vehicle except electric. In my opinion it would be DISASTROUS for a Diesel powered vehicle, you'd never even get the batteries charged in that short of drive.
