Regen..Maybe it does work...My story

Ok..Today we took a 300 mile trip (150 mile each way)...First I put 75psi in the tires and drove 72 MPH which is like 1900 RPM (6.4/Auto/SWB/4X4/3.73)...

It got a WHOOPING 16.5 MPG and I was pretty excited...Well while we there visiting the grave sites (It was 95 degrees) I decided to leave my son in the truck with it running...

Well while idling the truck decided to go into regen and it did it for about an hour and then we drove to eat lunch in which the regen continued...

After lunch we came out and started the truck and it was out of regen...we went and topped off the tank and drove home...well on the way home I once agian drove 72MPH and HOLY CRAP I got 17.8 MPG on the way home...

Is it possible that in Regen the system "Cleaned" itself which in turn gave me an increase in MPG?

P.S. Last weekend I drove the truck to St. Louis and drove 80 to 85 MPH and only got 14.5 (Which was like 2300 to 2500 RPM)

its is very likely, that if shortly after your trip it regened and then you saw an increase that the regen is why.

How can you tell that the truck is doing a regen? I have had mine since August... and only known it has done it twice?

Is this calculated by hand or by the meter?

That may be true, but you have to AVERAGE the mileage over the entire range. So, the lower mileage before regen would lower the overall average.

UDLOSE: I’m also interested in this, I have basically the same truck with 3000 miles on it and have never noticed a Regen that I can confirm and most of my driving has been driving around town, I don’t know if it would go into a Regen. Once on an 800 mile round trip with 1400 pounds in the truck driving 70mph the DTC was showing 14.5mpg and jump to 19.5mpg for about 40 miles and went back down to 14.5 and I was wondering if this was after a Regen?? I hand calculated that trip brim to brim and I averaged 14.4mpg(US). This is the best mileage my truck has got. So I also been wondering if and I would think you should get better fuel mileage after the DPF is cleaned out. Since my work schedule has slowed down, this is going to be my mission to investigate because it’s driving me nuts. Just for interest, we bought two new International trucks at work and a light comes on the dash that it has to go through Regen and counts down to shutdown, the driver has to pull over and press a button to start the Regen and it sits there and smokes for 20 plus minutes on the side of the road, the company have asked the driver to pull into a parking lot because they are afraid that someone is going to drive through the white smoke and hurt someone.

Hey MDarrough: If you remember me, I picked up my Jayco 313RKS last week, which is about the same weight as yours and drove it home (15 Mile), there is a 700 ft hill a mile long and with the cruise set at 60mph the DTC was showing 5.6mpg and running just under 3000 RPM. Since that trip I can’t get over 10mpg on the DTC and I’ve reset it. I’ve put on 150 mile in town stop and go and not going over 40mph. Should I have to take a run down the highway so the truck will go into Regen. Now that camping season has started, I ‘m hoping to get data that makes sense to me.

Sorry about the length….MPD56

I've definitely noticed an increase in mpg after letting the truck do a full regen. It's happened after the last two that I've just, let it happen. Doesn't seem to be as great an increase after a passive regen, while running down the highway. I'm seeing an increase of between 1.5 and 2 mpg after a regen. Thought maybe I was mistaken after the first one, but then after the second one, had the same result, I'm beginning to think that it has an effect. Currently getting around 14.5 mpg, mostly highway miles. Was getting around 13 mpg. Haven't noticed any difference while towing our big horse trailer. Still averages around 10 mpg.

Riverrat: See that is what’s driving me nuts, you have a dually, and getting better gas mileage. I’ve been driving under 40mph so I can at least see what the best I can get out of this truck, I gave the salesman a spreadsheet of my hand calculated gas mileage for thirteen tanks and he keeps telling me that Ford is coming out with a fix soon. Don’t take me wrong, this is my first diesel and I knew that I wasn’t going to get great gas mileage, I bought this truck to pull my dream trailer. But heavier Ford trucks are getting better fuel mileage. Sorry about the rant.

As for the Regen, if you get better mileage after a Regen and it’s not going into Regen because of me driving slow short trips in the city. I was thinking that if I look at what kind of sensor (pressure I think) is telling the ECM to start the Regen process and fool the ECM to go into Regen when I want it to.

My mileage for St. Louis trip was hand calculated (BTW I had 65 PSI in the tires then)..But yesterday my numbers come from the meter...

I pretty sure it was regening yesterday because it was idling around 1400 to 1500 RPM and if you pressed the brake it would go down to normal..but as soon as you lifted off beake it went right back up..

I have a tendancy to really baby the pedal away from stops, I try not to get my boost over 12-15 and keep my rpms under 2000. Sometimes if I really feel
like playing with it, I can reset the lie-o-meter and take it extra easy. I've seen as high as 18-18.5 mpg. That all goes away when I drive my normal patterns, drops down to the 14.5 mpg that I mentioned earlier.
I bought mine off the lot, if I had, had a chance to order, I probably would have ordered the 3.73 rear end. The trailer that I pull is only around 10,000 lbs. and the 3.73 would have handled that okay. Pretty flat here in Missouri.
I'm not to upset with the current mpg that I get because I traded in a "98" Dodge Dually V10 that only got me 10 mpg everyday that I owned it. Only got 8 mpg towing. I owned a 2004 F250 SC Shortbed for a total of 2 months and it only got 15-16 mpg and 11 towing my trailer. Couldn't get used to not having a dually and traded it away on the 08.

Well: 30 minutes after I posted here, my F350 must have ears, because I got into my truck to drive 10 miles to work. As I drove down my street the TDC said 8.4mpg and I reset it, I drove a half mile down the main street, I looked at the TDC and it said 9.2 mpg going 40mph, then all of a sudden I seen my first “CLEANING EXHAUST FILTER” on the TDC for about 3 seconds. I didn’t notice white smoke, the turbo boost change or the RPM go up so I don’t know if the cleaning was finished I got to work and sat in the truck and the truck didn’t go into high idle. The TDC mpg reading went down to 7.2 mpg. Should you keep driving till you’re out of Regen? If it wasn’t finished cleaning the DPF, I guess it will start again on my way home. Maybe on the way home I’ll go the long route. I don’t think an F350 PSD should get 7.2 mpg driving 40 mph through the city, if the fuel gauge wasn’t going down so fast I wouldn’t believe the TDC fuel mileage. I have to have something else wrong with this truck. Can someone straighten me out if I’m missing something here!!...Thanks in advance…..MPD56

Good to here a 6.4 getting good mileage. My dad has been happy with his F-450. He has almost 80K miles on it and is getting around 10 MPG pulling 35K LBS.

No question you should see better mileage after a regen. Think about what the regen is doing, it's burning off air restricting particulates. As particulates within the filter increase, your airflow decreases. Not to mention the regen itself is burning excess fuel.

UPDATE: When I got to work the other day, I shut off my 2008 F350 when it wasn’t done the Regen cycle and I was getting 7.2 mpg on the TDC. On the way home I seen the “CLEANING EXUAST FILTER” for the second time, so I took the long way home till the MPG started going up and when I got home the TDC said 9.2. Today I had to take a trip on the highway, 36 miles each way that had a few hills and set the cruise at 62 mph. Before I left I reset the TDC and on the way there the TDC reached 17.2 mpg (US) and reset the TDC before I left to go back home and the TDC showed 16.4mpg (US) when I got back home. I guess taking this truck for short drives around town only clogs the filter. I don’t intend to use this truck for a grocery cart and now I know I can’t use it for a daily driver, but I wanted to get miles on it before I pull my 12,000 pound 5th. The Dealer said that an ECM update is going to be out soon, but he also said that two months ago. I don’t know that this is useful data or not, but thought I would add my observations to the forum.

Did you calculated the amount of fuel burned while your truck was in regen while parked, or did you just calculate your mpg while on the road?
