OK, so I understand that I'm supposed to run an additive like Diesel Kleen with each tank. I've done searches & it seems like that's about the most popular one, however, I've also heard 2-stroke oil is the best thing to add??? Anyone else doing this?
Next question is, how do you guys know how often you're going through regen? I've been babying my truck to try to improve mileage, but I've noticed it regen twice in 600 miles. The only reason I noticed is because I happened to look down at the computer when the "cleaning" alert popped up. I could've easily missed other regens. Just curious if there's any other way to know. The truck doesn't run rough during the process & doesn't spit out a ton of smoke, either.
your boost gage will fluxate alot more then normal, the motor sounds alittle differnt and if you stop your exsaust will be alot hotter then normal

Babying these engines leads to dpf and egr problems down the road. I know fuel costs are prompting alot of folks to do this, but I'd rather pay for the fuel now than have the engine gunked up later. I have always run mine hard at least once daily, and I have never experienced any of these problems. My truck has 8000 miles on it, and I have had ONE regen at 6600 miles.

I am not so sure that the number of regens you've had has anything to do with how hard you're driving your vehicle. Thing is, Ford doesn't tell you what the parameters of a regen is. They just tell you that there's two different modes: active and passive. They also tell you that it's a normal process. The fact that you say you've only had one could either indicate problems with your truck that you're unaware of, or that you've uknowingly undergone passive regenerations.
I can't imagine running 2 stroke oil in a 6.4 with dual egr's and a DPF, agduckhunter. A little diesel kleen maybe. Your DPF will not like 2 stroke oil.
Ok, another noob, what is the "Regen" and what does it do? Does this happen on my 88' 7.3L IDI? On my gassers I add Lucas Fuel Additive and Lucas Oil Additive to all my stuff. Is it ok to add to this diesel? TIA, JASTECH

no ur 7.3 does not regen that is a 2008 new thing they just put a DPF of and it has to clean itself. i personally dont like lucas seen a few races were there cars were the only once to blow up.

I had a flash done last april but its not the newest one. Last nite I came home after a 40 mile drive and when I put it in park it jumped up to 1000 rpm's so I new it was regening, not wanting to set and idle I shut it down. This morning I had to do some lite hauling for a hour or so when I started up no regen but after I came back home and put in park up the rpm's went again so I took it for a run down the road aways and after coming back still regening so I shut it down again. Does it hurt to shut it down? Im working on dealer to do new flash will find out monday.

It will regen every 120-140 miles no matter how you drive it. I didn't realize this till I bought the Insight Monitor. Before I had it, it was hard to tell when it went into regen. The new PCM flash will display Cleaning Filter but it's only up for a few seconds. If your not looking at the display you'll miss it. It would be nice if it would alternate every few seconds or so with whatever display mode your in until the cleaning is finished. These engines are designed to run on ULSD. DO NOT add anything that's not compatible!!
The difference between same model year trucks is amazing to me. My message center will post "drive to clean exhaust filter". This message stays there until it is done with regen. I've actually only seen this twice. Once was after the dealer mech. let it idle for a couple of hours.
As far as additives, I use dieselkleen, going to order some optilube and try that, have read alot of good stuff on this product.
