Well, it looks like a recall was released today for excessive exhaust temperatures. Looks like a flash is in work. Lets try to keep this post on topic and not reply with a bunch of "the sky is falling" type replies.
Here is the info from the ford fleet website. I would post a link but it is password protected so I just copied it into the post.:
TO: All U.S. Ford and Lincoln Mercury Dealers
SUBJECT: ADVANCE NOTICE: DEMONSTRATION / DELIVERY HOLD: Safety Recall 07S49:
Certain 2008 F-250/350/450/550 Vehicles Equipped with a 6.4L Diesel Engine
Powertrain Control Module Recalibration
AFFECTED VEHICLES
Certain 2008 F-250/350/450/550 vehicles equipped with a 6.4L diesel engine, built at the Kentucky Truck Plant from Job #1 through March 9, 2007. Affected vehicles are identified in OASIS. In addition, for a list of vehicles assigned to your dealership, visit https://web.fsavinlists.dealerconnection.com. This information will be available on March 21, 2007.
REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL
To prevent the occurrence of excessive heat in the exhaust system or potential flame from the tailpipe, a revised PCM calibration is being developed.
SERVICE ACTION
DO NOT DEMONSTRATE OR DELIVER any of the affected vehicles involved in this safety recall. A new PCM calibration is being developed as described above. A complete Dealer Bulletin will be provided on Friday March 23, 2007 or as soon as the PCM recalibration software and repair instructions are available to support this safety recall.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of record will be notified via first-class mail after repair instructions have been provided to dealers.
OASIS
Consult OASIS for affected vehicles. FSA VIN listings for unsold vehicles will be available March 21, 2007.
PLEASE NOTE:
Federal law requires dealers to complete this recall service before a new vehicle is delivered to the buyer or lessee. Violation of this requirement by a dealer could result in a civil penalty of up to $5,000 per vehicle. Correct all vehicles in your new vehicle inventory prior to delivery

Dang, I guess I won't get the afterburner option! Just the thought of a nice long blue flame out the tailpipe when leaving a stoplight(think Batmobile) would be the coolest. This might be the holdup with deliveries that some have spoken of. I just want to get my truck scheduled for build.

Did you see this quote in the article?
'Jarvis said the flames could only occur in engines with leaking fluids, which he said was very rare. Two of the complaints involved leaking fuel injectors and the other involved leaks coming from a crack in the turbocharger shaft.'
I know it isn't the same, but what about all the 6.0leakers that have leaked fluids for the past 4 years? Here's a question for the Ford techs and engineers...if there is a slight oil residue on the bottom of the engine/transmission (from leaking seals, bed plates, or what have you), would there be enough transient heat from a regen to potentially catch that residue on fire?
There was speculation in another post about whether the super-hot regen burn or the flames shooting out the tail pipe could cause a grass fire. I guess that article sort of answered that question.

While i would never wish anything bad to a human, i hope the people involved in the EPA responsible for all these 'regulations' buys a truck and it catches fire in their driveway. I know i wouldn't pi$$ on them if they caught fire.

Greetings,
EPA SchmepeeA!
Sometimes I wonder how more refined fuel that costs more and provides less power per unit = Cleaner Air?
Not sure if you noticed, but Trains are allowed to keep using LSD except in the Liberal Peoples Socialist state of Califonia. Even though every other state (I believe) allows trains to use LSD, Ca. will not. Which means that any train in interstate commerace with Ca. will actually have to use ULSD.
Peace and Blessings

My 6.4 when it is in active regeneration, will burn paper held about 1 inch from the exhaust. I would hope that the new programming would only allow an active regeneration while the truck is moving, not at idle.
my truck was reflashed today before it left the plant in louisville. was then pdi'd at bill collins ford and was picked up and is on its way to me in florida - should have it late tomorrow afternoon.
details on the reflash were slim, but i do know that obviously it is too prevent the exhaust from getting too hot during regen, and it also had a provision in the programming to initiate the regen when the sensors in the exhaust read 31 psi of backpressure, versus the mid 20s that was in the initial programming.
The recall is only in pre-release status and we have not been notified that the calibration file is available as of today. I am sure it will be soon. I have had a couple of 2008's in for MIL concerns that were caused by PCM parameters being too tight. I was told that a calibration update was coming by the end of the month (March) that was to address a lot of little concerns. There was no mention of a recall though!

Ummm... this might be a silly question, but how does a reflash fix something that is caused by a leaking injector or a turbo ? Am I missing something ?
And these trucks are brand new. How is it that there are trucks with leaking fuel injectors and turbos already ?
"Keep in mind that the EPA had Ford making changes to the emissions programming at the very end of testing."
Well, Isuzu and Cummins live by the same EPA rules and the same deadlines. I don't hear of their engines having flames shooting out the exhaust because of leaking fuel injectors and turbochargers.
GM hasn't sold as many as Ford has. GM trucks just started hitting the lots this week and a few last week. Give it a little time, I'm going to speculate that they too will have teething problems.
First new Dmax customers on GM forums also claiming significant mileage drop from previous Diesel in line with Ford on what I'm hearing on this and other Ford sites...
