Hi all.I'm kinda new here, never posted but have read alot. I have a 08 f-350 king ranch job 2(august 07) with 12000 miles and was wondering if I should get it reflashed.I did a search and found that most of the guys didn't like it in april but didn't see anything current. Thanks for any help.Samuel
I have had three flashes. I had a second flash done in the spring (May?) and did like the shifting better, and my in town mileage went down. On Oct 20th I brought my truck in for a stuck front calliper and they said that the engine took a new update, wife picked up the truck so I didn't get to talk to the Service Tech. I notice that the truck is shifting earlier and not smooth, but the in town mileage is up about 2 MPG. I'm leaving on a 1000 mile trip tomorrow and when I get back I will have a better idea, because I took the same trip last month and had kept the data. I don't know what version of update was done, but I hope I'm going to like this one, the last one Regened too much, bad turbo lag, ran with higher boost, but the shifting was smoother.

This topic has come up before. I posted the same question in July. Had a few reply to it. Back then the consensus was leave it alone. I have 13K miles on my truck and have not had a reflash since I bought it in July, 08. It runs perfect and I really enjoy the truck. I have not had any reason to go into the dealer, I do my own maintenance. When I bought it they had it up to date with all the necessary recalls at that time and there have not been any critical recalls since other than the reflashes. So my attitude at this point is "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

The problem with that sentiment is that if something DOES break, that they will not pay for the repairs of things that break as a result of you ignoring the recall notice. They send out those notices to cover their butts; you may get lucky and not ever have a problem, but when and if you do, you're going to wish you took it in.
I just had the reflash done today. I hate going to the stealership down the street from me, so I drove about 1 hour or so out to Fontana (California) to have my man Matt oversee the work on my truck. Averaged 14 MPG on the way out. Driving back, I averaged 18.5 MPG.

You picked up 4 1/2 miles MPG with just a computer flash ???

The notice that went out for the flash was not a recall notice. If you registered your vehicle with "My Ford" which then contains your VIN and model number, it will tell you if there are any recall notices for your vehicle. I did not have the flash(es) and there is no recall notice for my vehicle.
The notice did not state "mandatory". However, I will check with my dealer relative to your question.

Not sure yet. I've only driven it the distance between Fontana and my house (about 70 miles). I keep a fuel log and have always gotten anywhere between 13 and 15 MPG. Seeing the increase is a surprise, but I'm not expecting it to stay there.
@TDW - The letter I received explicitly stated that failure to have my vehicle serviced per any recall notice ... in a timely manner ... may result in Ford's refusal to cover under warranty any damages that might result. Ford is pretty crafty. I would not trust Ford's website or courtesy snail mail notices to deal with your truck because sometimes those systems fail. Your real safety is calling the dealer.

these flashes were nothing more than a customer satifaction program. I would not recommend it. overall the people that I know are not as happy with the latest flash.
so the saying goes, if it an't broke don't fix it.

I called my original dealer and another dealer in town. I was told the flashes were not mandatory and would not affect my warranty. I have read quite a few replies from individuals who said they took their vehicle in for unrelated service and when the dealers run the computer diagnostics they see the flash version and will update to the latest as part of their service. A number of guys got the famous 08B07 flash that way and were not happy with it. That one also programmed the transmission controller and had to be suspended because it was wiping out the trans controller. The original 08B07 letter said there was a limited duration for having the update - if it was a recall there would be no limited duration.

The original flash had problems. I was initially told to wait until I had received a letter from Ford. I got that letter from Ford, and it says exactly what I had said earlier re warranty. You can take the word of a service writer who will deny he ever spoke with you regarding this matter, or take the word of a written letter which you never got to begin with.
What I'm trying to say is: you never got the letter. It doesn't affect you. As soon as you say so-and-so told you so, then you've got no leg to stand on.

Can and will the dealer do a reflash if I bring it in for unrelated service (oil change etc.) Can I ask them not to do a reflash?
I find it better to tell them you have one of the problems the "reflash" addresses. Then I would think (read, hope) they would be obligated to perform the "reflash".
