Question shutting down engine

Can anyone tell me if the regeneration is going on and I get home can I shut down the truck or should I let it finish the regen first? haven't been able to find it in my manual.

I would not be concerned about shutting down your 6.4 when in regeneration. If you're parking it in a garage, you'll probably notice it will warm it up a bit and you'll hear the DPF clinking and tinking some as it cools down. When you start it up again and the sensor indicates the DPF still needs some cleaning it will kick in to regeneration again. I know some of the guys are continuing to drive around till it's done, most say that is not necessary.

I've never had a problem with driving while in regen, stopping to run into a store and start driving again, stop it again and so on.

I just turn it off, it just re-starts the regen process within 10-15 minutes the next time I start the truck.

I know this is dangerous, but I e-brake it and leave it in drive when I get home and it's still regening. Just have to keep it away from other vehicles. I think it takes a little longer but it's not a bad option when you're messing around in garage and you can keep an eye on it.

With the new programming the truck does not actually regen when below a certain speed as it cannot keep the temperature where it needs to be...so I am not sure that setting the park brake and leaving it in gear will effectively clean the filter. When the programming was such that you could actually regen in neutral it actually bumped the RPM's up enough to keep the temperature where it needed to be for regen.

If you just turn the truck off before allowing it to completely regen it will go into regen again if you get driving before it cools down. If its is still warm enough it will start regenning shortly after you get going again, if you are far enough into the cycle then it may not start up until it determines it is time.

If at any time i get to complete a cycle...then I am good for another 150 miles.

If you continue to drive the truck with repeated attempts at a regen over a period of time and never getting to complete the cycle then it will eventually plug up the filter to the point that the computer will tell you to drive the truck until the exhaust filter is clean. I got that message a few times.

The big thing to keep in mind is that everytime you interrupt a regen...it resets the counter.

This is how things work on my truck. Job 1, 60,000miles.
Regen frequency is about 160 miles. Regen Distance is on average 10miles.

If i interrupt regen before the 5 mile mark, it will try and regen the next time it gets to temp...This cycle will continue as long as i never reach the 5 mile mark. The longer i keep going like this, the worse my performance gets and the worse my mileage gets. Eventually my computer tells me to keep driving the truck to clean the exhaust filter.

If I allow a regen over 5 miles but under the complete 10 mile cycle. As soon as my transmission comes out of gear, to go into reverse, park or neutral, the cycle is interrupted and it will not go back into regen until i have travelled another 80 miles (50% sooner then normal). Half cycle only half clean filter.

Because I only live 7 miles from work my truck would not fully warm up on a trip. It would start regen about 1/2 way to work and always be less then the 5mile minimum for my truck to do a 1/2 cycle. So it was always regening and after a week i would force myself to take a 10 mile drive to clean the filter.

I got tired of wasting fuel and time-so i permanantly cleaned my filter . My city mileage went from 11 to 14mpg and my highway from 16.5 to 19...no more wasted fuel and no more wasted time and a lot better running truck.

That can not work as for the vehicle must be going faster than 30 mph for the regen to work.

Below 30 mph regen is not taking place.

If I am in city traffic and I have to stop for a light, I power brake it just enough to get my EGT's up to 1,200 degrees and that keeps the regen going.

Don't drive successive short distances aborting regen

Not a problem to abort a regeneration when you stop somewhere. However, don't continue driving short distances never allowing a regeneration to complete. This can damage the DPF irreversibly. I am sure that thing is expensive to replace.

I dont know that you are damaging it...but you are definately plugging it up and they are fricken expensive...like $1500-2000 for a replacement from what I have heard.

Remember guys, sitting at a light doesn't stop the regen cycle...it just suspends it until the temperature is above the threshold again. Brake torquing at the light to keep the temperature up likley is not shortening your regen cycle very much. Driving is the most efficient way to clean it.
